Metacritic is full of dumbass spammers it seems. |
You don't need to validate seeing the movie on Metacritic, so it's a good site for review bombing.

Fresh from cinema
6/10
It's one of the lesser Nolan movies, but he is in decline as of late.
I think people call it "Absolute Cinema" because it's a movie that isn't shot like this nowadays—as it has a lot of practical sets, a lot of extras—but IMO somehow (I've seen it in regular format) not shot in an interesting way. For me, there weren't any breathtaking set pieces, but instead, it had a lot of close-ups. After watching it, I have to admit too that there was a lot of miscast characters: Tom Holland as Telemachus, but if the idea was having a fucking sissy boy, then it was a great cast. Fucking Zendaya, because she has to be in everything. Anne Hathaway as Penelope I found cringe (especially in the argument scene with Telemachus). Elliot Page—just fucking nope, especially with his male-female alternating voice. Lupita Nyong'o—I like her as an actress, but here as Helena, she only vibed angry niggres. Matt Damon was ok. John Leguizamo and Robert Pattinson were fantastic.
The fucking costumes were atrocious, especially the armors—it was Witcher's scrotum-armor level of shit. Also the visual inconsistencies: Odysseus had three ships that, between scenes, had from 20 to 100 soldiers on boards—WTF? Also, sailing in full armor in full sun. Additionally, the ships had landing boats that apparently they conjured from thin air because they were nowhere to be seen on the ships. Really amateur hour. To this, some shitty CGI, or rather your typical mid-2020s CGI where everybody forgot how to render high-quality shit.
The movie is kind of a slog where we see snippets of more interesting parts of Odysseus's journey, aka meeting some mythological creatures that are shown to be more eldritch, unbeknownst beings from a human point of view. And the situation in Penelope's court with all the suitors just sitting there for years and feasting. The last act really elevates the movie from being plain, where finally all the plot situations that happened to Odysseus make sense.
For me, the movie lacked brilliance—it felt like Dunc but with adapting mythology, somehow a failed attempt but praised because it was made by a known director.
Egger's Northman eats this shit for breakfest if I would have to compare.

Odysseus originally is basically a heroic character. Did they make a bleak antihero out of him in this movie? I am asking because I just about had enough of deconstructionism to pay cash for it at a cinema, and would instead wait for yarr.

| Quote: | Box Office: ‘The Odyssey’ Has Epic Opening Day With $51 Million
Early estimates had the saga grossing $90 million to $100 million by Sunday, but after a stellar opening day, forecasts have the film climbing as high as $120 million. “The Odyssey” will soon become the third film in 2026 to open above $100 million after “Toy Story 5” ($159 million) and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” ($131 million). “The Odyssey” carries a hefty $250 million price tag.

Weekend could fly to $125M and then $400M+ final, God damn.

Spoiler: | Here he is tormented man for his actions in the siege of Troy and failure to safely get his men back home. He isn't really heroic, more of plain man and great soldier but implied to suffer from PTSD. And the journey home is more of an issue of his bad decisions then gods interferance. There's a bit of antireligous theme were the law of Zeus aka you have to suck a guest dick if he asks for it because he might be Zeus in disguise is used to take advantage of people a fucking lot. |

Not really. Woman are suppressed here - take it like you want. It's not in your face but there's undertone.
As goes for emotional men - no one cries here (except Tom Holland being a wus), but it's implied that men have no morals and are slaves to their primal drives. And later in the movie just literally said/shown.

Wait until you hear how stronk and influential female gods were in greek mythology the same mythology they ignored in this flick.

new to imdb? scores at the start can be in the 9-range even, likely this will sit on a 7.2-7.5'ish eventually. there are so many b-movies which starts at 9, to end at 3 to 4/10. this is because everyone involved with the movie gives it a 10/10. not rocket science, right?
obviously not too many people are familiar with the source material, that would change the score dramatically too.
changing characters to go from strong/proud males to weak and whiny cucks = making movies for the MoDeRn AuDiEnce (=weak cucks and females, lefties, but mostly to please MSM and award givers).

Not gonna watch it until the Web-dl so I can't rate it for some time but it looks like the woke casting and misplaced modern language was not enough to ruin an otherwise well done movie.
If its good it won't flop, no matter what the haters say or try to boycott. Reverse Hogwarts Legacy.
