It's been public for quite a while now and works up to firmware 6.x (so no PS5 Pro since these were 8.x).
Most PS5 games can be dumped now, up to 12.70 (so around april 2026) and any console shipping with 12.70<= can install youtube and jailbreak it (pretty much any brand new PS5 can be jailbroken).
But yeah booting up Linux needs an hypervisor exploit, which only works up to 6.x.
Sadly cant jailbreak my pro. On 12.70 already, but no bd drive attached , dont own the required games so im boxed in as i cant log into psn to buy them

TIL! I knew things had progressed, but I didn't realise that I could go and buy a stock PS5 Pro, jailbreak it, and then play all games up to April 2026.
I'd be extremely tempted to do exactly that, if a) I had any money (lol) and b) GTA6 was guaranteed to work near release (unlikely!).
Sucks that for the first ever time I am considering playing a new GTA game without access to the best possible hardware to do so. It PAINS me but it is what it is! Hopefully PS5 and PS5 Pro don't perform too differently (Performance mode > Quality for me, always!)

you can actually. You can restore a backup from another PS5 (google Gezine/Y2JB you will find it) with YouTube and its hacked save to jailbreak. No need for a disc drive or a special game.
No drive is needed for YouTube even if you never were on PSN to grab it.
@Horrordee : do it, don't tell headshot though, he doesn't like pirate bears!
Mind you, for > 12.00 firmware you can only use "Patience2Jailbreak" (AKA P2JB) which takes around 50min to... jailbreak! The good news is that it survives the rest/sleep mode.
As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.
This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.
We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support.
this would be a good opportunity for xbox to swwop in and say they ll release the next gen xbox hw and that they ll continue physical games but guess they are too busy gutting whats left of the studios etc.
Sony erases digital content from libraries; we’re reminded we don’t own what we buy
Sony has been scaling down its digitial store for a few years.
Sony recently informed its PlayStation customers in the United Kingdom that they will no longer be able to watch previously purchased movies and shows from production and distribution company StudioCanal. As of September 1, affected customers will no longer be able to stream 551 titles from the PlayStation Store.
In a legal notice first spotted by gaming news outlet PlayStation LifeStyle, Sony said that affected customers will lose the ability to stream titles including Outrage: Way of the Yakuza, Paddington, Paddington 2, Pan’s Labyrinth, Rambo 3, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas “due to our content licensing agreements.” As of September, Sony will remove any affected titles that UK users bought from their PlayStation library, per the notice.
It’s possible that Sony may still make a deal with StudioCanal by September 1, or even after, that would allow users to keep watching the content they bought. This happened in 2023, when Sony said it would have to pull 1,318 seasons of Discovery shows from customers’ libraries. A few weeks after its announcement, Sony said that it would not pull the content because it had updated its licensing arrangements with Discovery.
Still, affected customers shouldn’t keep their hopes too high. Sony already pulled 314 StudioCanal titles from libraries in Germany and Austria in 2022. More recently, Sony deleted people’s Funimation digital libraries after it decided to merge the anime streaming service with Crunchyroll. Sony has also been scaling down its digital store and stopped selling movie and show rentals and purchases in August 2021. Even if StudioCanal were willing to make a deal with Sony, it’s feasible that Sony has less interest in retaining digital titles than before.
Regardless, the incident is a reminder that we don’t own the stuff we purchase digitally. Instead, digital rentals and purchases are merely long-term licenses that are only valid for as long as the streaming service has the right to distribute said content. Often, that’s a finite amount of time.
Still, Sony’s announcement has frustrated some, including those who believe Sony should offer refunds or who think digital stores should stop using terms like “purchase” for long-term rentals.
They're really trying to give saarbox a run for their money, aren't they

I’m all for game preservation but didn’t get a disc drive for the PS5 Pro yet.
If I was going to, I would think it would have been by now.
May as well just embrace the digital future, own nothing and be happy about it
Are you for real? PS5 was basically the last place to own your games in physical versions without having an internet connection (with sad exceptions like Jedi Survivor, and maybe some more). Honestly, that was one of the arguments for me not to invest in new PC, as I was tired of this constant "digital only" setup. I buy only disc versions of the games on PS5.
Now you will own nothing and you will be happy and you ask what what is the huge trigger? I get that some people don't care about owning stuff, but there are some that do.
One example I really like is beginning of GTA Vice City where Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" song plays in the radio. It is no longer there as Sony lost the license. Or whole Vladivostok FM from GTA IV, that have been basically all replaced with different songs. And that is technically minor change, but who knows what future will bring. Maybe some bigger changes or censorship?
So if you are lucky, you will play a different game in 10 years (yes, some of us are playing games from 30-20-10 years ago). If you are not, game will be desisted or whole storefront removed.
On PC, you have at least option to "backup" your games (i.e. buying from GOG or surfing high seas), on PS5, you have closed ecosystem and you cannot do anything on it.
And that is not even mentioning prices. I already see 80$-90$ as a new standard where option to resale discs will no longer exist. I cannot even count how many titles I've bought second hand just to test them and further resale if I don't like something or don't feel like it is worth collecting.
So yeah, it is a sad news that will not change the already messy gaming industry to anything better and let us be sad and angry because of that.
I know that, as with Steam, we will all learn to live with it, but if that is the future, I don't need PS6, I will be happy having PC with at least an option to preserve the titles I really like. This whole mess, including no disc GTA 6, weren't in my bingo card for 2026 and I'm actually sad because of those 2 news.
