Gothic 1-2 is known for its fantastic combat, G3, not so much...

Such a shame as the atmosphere, music, cities, etc. still have all the Gothic charm but the combat kills the game, even with community patches. But well, 1 and 2 will always remain classics thankfully.

It's just a matter of personal preference for me. Crimson desert looks like generic UE5 weeb slop to me so I never paid much attention to it even if it blew up all my feeds. There is nothing interesting about its story, setting or gameplay.
KCD is still a game I jump in and play to this day, it's the historical setting, feudal society and realistic tone of the story and visuals that I find unique. And it is a fact that you can't get what it offers anywhere else. Meanwhile if you want generic magic fantasy it's a dime a dozen.

its the definition of generic, at least the little i have seen. though, i actually enjoy generic fantasy quite a lot, even reading generic fantasy books, comforting and familiar.

i really should start playing KCD 2 though, seems great.

I just did not enjoy this game as much as KCD1. I don't know why....the graphics and atmosphere are great, but it lacked something. I think it was too easy and I maxed most skills in the first area, so then I kinda lost the incentive to explore more. And the first armor I found, the one spread around in the chests, was so strong I never had to upgrade it, making the whole thing seem stale. I don't know, maybe I really missed out, but the struggle to get better like in KCD1 only existed for a few hours in this one.

that stuff can truly make a game turn into a bore, developers has to be very careful with stuff like that, like planting a too powerful armor somewhere. i have had it happened as well once or twice in other games..

I put off playing KCD2 myself for a long time, thinking it was going to be similar to KCD1 (which I did like, despite it being a buggy mess sometimes). Boy, how I was wrong Laughing

I think KCD2 improves on everything, and then some. Difficulty aside (it's indeed a lot easier than KCD1), it oozes atmosphere and detail. It's not a game I play for the challenge, like a souls-like or something, but more akin to GTA games.

The one thing I missed was something like learning to read and write in KCD1, when texts in books change from nonsense to actual words. That was awesome. KCD2 mentioned something about learning Latin, but I didn't really notice this in the game.

Henry II indeed requires the player to activate some "self-gimping", otherwise it becomes a tad too mundane which is not the ideal experience for this type of game. I even decided to load up an older save at some point and deliberately skip quite a few skills/upgrades (including the early Brunswick's armour) so that the protagonist doesn't suffer too much from power tripping. Razz The master strike is another op feature that you get in the first area, though there are mods that can tweak it and reduce its effectiveness.

The first Henry had that problem too, but its rags-to-riches-like difficulty curve was more naturally gradual and satisfying overall, with the atmosphere feeling more personal as well. As I said before, it would be an absolute crime to jump straight to II without playing I just because the sequel is more polished - they're meant to form a single entity with their continuous narrative, and they're both brilliant in their own way. A beautiful anomaly in today's semi-rotten gaeming world.

You're right, I mean, that would've been the right approach. But even without the armor (which I did take off after a while), I don't think doing all the quests and playing the game normally should max out your skills before even being halfway in the game. I really thought the next 'set' of perks and levels would come after reaching Kuttenberg as I could not believe it was really maxed out at that point. Thankfully there's the hardcore mode now, but to me, I kinda ruined my first and main playthrough. I never once felt threatened in combat...won all the arena games, it's just so damn easy. What a shame.

Aside from that I love Warhorse and it's a fantastic achievement. I just need the rags-to-riches to really enjoy an RPG.

As long as they let their own writers cook and make it as immersive as KCD was it could be good.

I'm just about to start the DLC for KCD2 after I did a re-run of KCD1. Still would rather not have any fantasy myself but they might make it more grounded who knows.

Presumably Warhorse will stay well clear of Unreal Angina 5.

They better! They seem to have a good thing going with CryEngine, but it might be much more difficult to hire talent familiar with CryEngine than Angina.

I am sure there are plenty of developers who didn't dye their hair purple or call themselves xir, xur, hurr.

Wariohorse ftw. Very Happy

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
