I'll give it a try. Telling a story through gameplay is exactly what makes the medium unique and different from passive media like books and tv. .

Gameplay here seems extremely lackluster.

What adds to this medium is non-linear gameplay, that's where it's different from reading a book or watching a movie and it can actually add value.

Dialogue driven stuff with tons of cut-scenes, maybe with focus on voice acting etc. they should put that focus into making it a movie instead, its the medium they want and what just works better and not only that, i can ADD to that experience, it could be a better product.

BUT a movie like that would not gain a lot of attention, games are just more "hip", easier to market, its the only reason it's a ""game"".

Yeah, totally with you, already uninstalled after 30 minutes. Spiritfarer it is not Laughing
Even as a walking simulator it's bland and uninteresting.

Main character is very hatable too, happy to skip!

The music so far wasn't that great either, if it's supposed to be a celebration of '90s music. I lol'd when Silverchair started playing. Temu Nirvana's license was probably a lot cheaper than the original Very Happy

I don't care about the lack of gameplay but the story that's told is just crap. Whoever likes upperclass 90s teenies whining about parents and relationships, skateboarding and listening to music - good for you. It's not my childhood. These were the kids laughing at us while we were at home playing Super Mario World Laughing

So true Very Happy

The numbers don't decide, the system is a lie. The river running dry, the wings of butterflies.
And you may pour us away like soup. Like we're pretty broken flowers.
We'll take back what is ours. One day at a time.

@Shocktrooper
I didnt play it, but watched the 2 hours playthrough so same-same really Razz

It definitely gives the vibe of 80/90s 'daytime drama' shows where those same kids could be put in a show or movie where they complain about 'life being hard', while living in a 2 story upper Westside brownstone, riding around in a new car their parents bought and crying about they only got accepted to the 2ND college they wanted to attend. And found out thier best friend, has other friends and offended by that.
Not the same premise, but the same 'these types of kids teen problems' vibe.

That sense of wanting to say: No that's just life, it isn't hard. Your sheltered and pampered so little problems seem huge because your world is so little they take it all up.

It might just be me, but it feels like it is a teen story, that was wrote by some a 40 something, Fresh Market visiting, 'organic mom' that listens to Fresh Air on public radio and carries around her "I support PBS" tote bag so people can know she donated.

Mixtape's song licenses were paid in perpetuity, so don't expect licensing issues to lead to a delisting

Last week, Annapurna Interactive and award-winning Australian studio Beethoven & Dinosaur released Mixtape, the narrative-driven adventure game set to the soundtrack of a generation, for Switch 2.

Mixtape follows three high school friends on their last night of adventure, set to the soundtrack of a generation. En route to their final party together, a perfectly curated playlist draws the trio into dreamlike reenactments of their formative memories. Experience a variety of narrative vignettes exploring the pivotal moments that shaped them. It’s the greatest hits of the teenage wasteland, from the first kiss to the last dance.

The curated setlist mentioned above is a who’s who of big-name bands, featuring songs from the Smashing Pumpkins, Devo, The Cure, Portishead, Silverchair, the list goes on and on. Those who play a lot of games with licensed music probably all had the same thought, and it was that this game is going to get its songs yanked or removed from sale altogether due to licensing issues at some point. Thankfully, that’s not going to be the case.

In a chat with Kotaku, Mixtape creative director Johnny Galvatron spoke about the licensed music in the game, and he assuaged fears about the tunes causing any trouble down the road. According to Galvatron, all the licenses for the songs in Mixtape have been paid in perpetuity, so that should make the game immune to takedowns and the same goes for the songs. In other words, as long as you have a platform that Mixtape was released on, you should be able to purchase it years, if not decades after launch.
Really amazing how "indie" games have come so far Razz
