It has the exact same mood of The Martian, so it’s a function of the author, not director. I haven’t read the Hail Mary book yet.

Same watched it with wife last night. I rarely watch movies but seemed interesting.
I got the same vibe. I kept rolling around in my head: Oh its a baby yoda, "I am Groot", style toy line setup being primed!
I expected rocky to be more than "Mechanically Adept Gru Minion"
He really felt like Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs Monkey, that has the speech translator. Or maybe Pixar's UP dog.

That's not it at least for me, I don't watch Star Trek, the movies or the shows.

Because I'm not interested in it is all. Space Soap Drama TV Shows are not my thing.
I mean I HAVE seen it, not like I'm confused what it is, or never seen an episode. Just not my thing.

Not my style either.
99% of what I watch is: Stand up comedy, documentary stuff (mostly space), How its made types shows, and adult/whatever they are called, cartoons like: Venture Brothers, Archer, Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, Boondocks, BoJack Horseman.
And that's pretty much it.

Martian was far more grounded, this is Pixar/Disney/Marvel vibe, especially the ending but the whole movie is just too cute for its own good. Nothing wrong with some sprinkles of that, but nah, felt like a kids movie and nothing wrong with that either, just not my preference for sci-fi.

It's a shame because I enjoyed The Martian (movie) despite its shortcomings - it had indeed a similar approach and frivolous tone/occasional hollycheese but to me, it provided a far better balance between actual sci-fi elements and (melo)drama than Hail Rocky.
@DX: Haha yup, as soon as I saw the little guy I had a genuine moment. At that point, I already knew the movie was inevitably moving in a direction that didn't appeal to me, while also thinking about the number of plushies ready to ship from the Amazon HQs

Didn't 'real human bean' affect that mood in any way?
After all, like Martian, it is practically one actor movie. |
Sure, but Damon has a lot more charisma to carry that mood. Never been a fan of Gosling or find him a good actor.

BTW
Spoiler: | Was it ever explained in the book or movie why the other two doods in the ship died? |
|
Spoiler: | It's been a while, but I think yes. IIRC it was that this type of travel was risky for everyone to be begin with. Like, they were put in a medically induced coma which normally kills everyone, but a few select people with specific genetic markers. In the book that is also the reason why main-guy has to go, because the original crew members died and they had no time to look for other qualified people with the genetics.
But even with the right genetics, it didn't work for everyone. So basically, bad luck |
