After playing the demo I can honestly say that Nival did a very good job preserving the good ol' HoMM feel.
The graphics are very nice and the animations really give the game an additional dimention (besides the actual depth Wink )

The Demo was pretty damn hard though. I'm yet to finish the first campaign mission (Didnt try the skirmish yet.)

Oh yes. I hope the final version will have a difficulty setting that allows me to finish the campaign, would be a shame to get the collectors edition and then fail horribly...

LOL

My computer can't play ANY game that's being released these days, not even HoMMV or Dreamfall:TLJ2. I wish I had money to upgrade. Oh well, I've still got 20 games or so that I haven't played...and considering how little I actually play, that ought to last me another year or so. Very Happy

For those that have already tried the demo: does the game play more like HOMM3, or HOMM4?

HOMM3.

I enjoyed both HOMM3 and HOMM4 but HOMM4 got a bit lame since you always ended up with an army of 5 heroes and two tier 4 creatures. Or the old favourite 7 heroes Wink

HoMM3 is the only game in the series that I've actually enjoyed.

Yeah was a couple of bugs/bummers in the demo. For example in the haven scenario if you did a melee attack with Isabel it was Godric who attacked.

If you unhide the building tree you can see what you need to build.

First of all, when i fisrt heard that the devellopers are Nival i said- "oh no, another etherlords" Then there was the first alpha version- it was horrible and almost unplayable. I didn't had a chance to feel the game.., then there was the beta, the things wern't different- but now in this demo... i must say this is really a good sequel to the heroes universe. It's really close to heroes III (my favorite). The 3d graphics are good, and even with my old radeon 9000pro i can get max details. I'm really looking forward. But still i think there are some bugs to work.. (like the missing corpses on the battlefield when you pass them with another unit, or the different charge animation of hevan female hero, and i think that the heroes themselfs are quite a weak even at level 24)

I think they didn't want to make heroes overpowered, like in HOMM4 (which I really enjoyed, BTW). Great demo, although campaign mission was a little bit too hardcore for me (don't laugh, please).

....I've waited for this game since Fabrice himself came to Celestialheavens in 2003 to ask us of our opinions and now it's finally DONE! YES!!!

I won the Haven campaign scenario on Heroic (took me 5-6 tries though). I tell you, you gotta play perfectly. No screwups whatsoever. (Probably helps that I'm a hardcore fan of the series though :/ )

The factions are:

  • Haven
  • Sylvan
  • Academy
  • Inferno
  • Necropolis
  • Dungeon

Rainyday: Zoom out and pan* the view so you can see far. It hacks on my Radeon 9700 Pro @351/321 if I do that and I can't use AA at all so I find it very strange that it works perfect on your system

* = Not sure about this word.

Heroic, damn I get my ass nailed! I haven't really played much M&M so maybe thats why, but you must be real good.

Well, i've said that i play with max details (very high), but it's far from perfect Smile. No AA and 2x anisotropic filtering (at 1024x768), i don't touch the camera much, because i like the default view. But still it takes some time to get me in the town.. Good thing is that the fps don't really matters for a turn based game Rolling Eyes

p.s. i feel strange that in the demo they've put a campaign maps- the last map of the Heaven for example.I think this is a big spoiler to the game story..

from my point of view, this is far the best game in years. i enjoyed homm2 and 3, but the 4 was awfull. the gameplay in the demo is highly addictive. and the graphic is nice, besides some problems -sometimes- by placing the cursor in the right spot without the need of zooming in, and some minor bugs. great game. a must play for every gamer.

Loved Homm2 and 3.. I actually think that Homm2 was better in its day. I could spend days playing it...almost without any sleep at all. Ive played the demo and all i can say is that i have a few sleepless weeks ahead Wink

Very nice of them to include 2 campaign chapters in the demo!
