I don't play "myself" in RPG's. I come up with a character and play staying true to that character's personality. It's called ROLE PLAYING.

But you should be able to pick your one role to play.
And a female Aloy type of character is not the role I want to play.

Playing yourself in a RPG is not a active choice. You self insert without having a clue that you're doing it. It's likely not so easy to self insert into stories with birds eye perspective though, but high quality normal games with relatable characters (doesn't have to be terribly relatable as you can self insert to anything as long as it's not too different as a person) most of you self insert way more than you think you do.

Nah. I approach every decision and dialogue choice from the character's PoV. Playing myself is just boring and always leads to the same kind of character.

And? The point is?
What's with the CAPS?
You role-play whoever the hell you want, yes. Including someone that resembles or borrows from your own persona.
And let me tell you: you WILL play a huge part of 'your-self' without even realizing it.

That study is about the player assuming aspects of the player character’s identity rather than projecting their own identity onto the character.
At most, the paper alludes to a slight overlap between the character and the player, most of which the player is aware of and in selective control of. It’s a far cry from your original claim.
