Runs smooth and faster than Win10 after all the tweaking and bloatware killing, I love it cause my Forge is faster.

Still have some latency and PotPlayer problems, Mpv player runs better for some reason, it is a lighter version.

exactly, its a dude with 110 mill subs . videos like that hurt ms and google and i love it

they deserve the shitstorm thats coming . soon they will be like intel. far behind and ditched to the curb

win11 is a privacy nightmare and the screenshotting ai is all the proof u need to know they dont give a fuck. even if u pay them they will still steal all ur data and every patch is a new opportunity to sneak in more telemetric stealing bloat

Mines from July of 2019 - so 6 years now - same boat.

I remember back in the late 90s and early 2000s when a yearly format was all but a necessity. Very Happy

"Update and Shut Down problem".
Out of 3 PCs in my household I don't remember any of them having this issue.
1 is desktop with win pro 10 key bought with one of those bulk discounts subsequently updated to win pro 11
1 is notebook with win 11 home natively preinstalled.
1 is notebook with win 10 home preinstalled, later updated to win 11 home.

I use this to disable most crap as well as many other security issues. When you start it it will scan to see if any of the settings has reverted/re-bloated.

https://www.w10privacy.de/english-home/

I also do a ton of tweaking in registry and disabling many services. Even though I don't really have anything to hide as far as legality is concerned (except for pirated software) I still HATE privacy issues more than ever. When Microsoft and other big corporations started to snoop on us I really became privacy/security concerned/aware. Fuck them all. Internet is continually becoming more controlled by all these corporations that collect as much data about us that they can. With AI it's become even worse since they use AI to analyse our habits to identify us and track us/spy on us. Internet was supposed to be relatively free and safe (except when the user is the really dumb one).

I'm thinking of getting a Mullvad (VPN) account. They're one of two VPN's I know that can actually be trusted. They don't save any kind of logs or data about you as opposed to most other VPN's (in various degrees).

Mullvad has been audited by several independent auditors with zero findings, they've had the police enter their place to find logs or any other kind of evidence which they obviously didn't find; they had to leave emptyhanded. The law about keeping logs only applies to ISP's, not VPN's since they only encrypt all traffic from you->ISP->Mullvad. You can pay with bitcoins, money cards etc. if you don't want to use a trackable payment option.

With Windows 11 it's even more important to be aware and concerned about privacy and tracking bullshit.

I also have a right-click menu addon that lets me block/unblock exe's in the firewall:

Great to use on exe's that you don't want to connect to the internet.

I installed it when my Win10 installation borked. I borrowed a USB stick from a friend but it only had Win11 on it. I installed it and figured I'd reinstall Win10 the next day. Lazy me never did and instead I started to customise and fix Win11 to the point I'm at today. It's basically Win10 now, both in looks and function.

Oh, if you guys are really into privacy there's Prevent Restore (the free/demo version can be used but there are few options you can change - it still covers the most important functions like overwriting empty space and clearing the MFT). It overwrites empty space with one of several algorithms you can choose between as well as number of cycles. There's obviously no need to run more than one cycle on an SSD. The most important feature is that it also cleans the MFT (Master File Table) from any records of files that you've deleted or moved. The MFT is a really sneaky thing in NTFS that few people think about when it comes to personal privacy.

Quote:
The Master File Table (MFT) is a critical component of the NTFS file system that serves as a central index for all files and directories on an NTFS volume.
It stores comprehensive metadata for each file and directory, including the file name, size, creation and modification dates, access permissions, and pointers to the physical location of the file's data on the disk.

The Master File Table (MFT) has been used by legal entities as evidence in digital forensics investigations. The MFT is a critical component of the NTFS file system that contains metadata for every file and directory on a volume, including file names, creation and modification timestamps, file sizes, and physical locations on disk.
This information is invaluable for forensic investigators, as it allows them to recover deleted files, track user activity, and establish timelines of events, even when files have been hidden or renamed.

The MFT entries aren't deleted when you delete files/folders and can still be extracted and read by some serious tools. I don't think that's particularly interesting for pirated software/music etc. If you've got any kind of material that you don't want to be recoverable by a legal entity which includes stuff like political material, criminal stuff like files with information about buying drugs online/darknet, hacking, high level piracy related stuff etc. I'd recommend clearing the MFT with Prevent Restore.

There's also encryption for those that need it. I haven't looked up a lot about encryption since I don't feel a huge need for it. I guess Veracrypt is one of the more well known encryption systems that can encrypt entire disks/partitions incl. creating a hidden encrypted partition or create an encrypted virtual disk image. Beyond that I don't know much more.

Oh.. don't use OneDrive or similar for anything you don't want MS/Google/etc. to scan/record/save, at least not unless you password protect the files in a .7z file with a good password. Don't forget to tick the "encrypt filenames" box.

So yeah, I've learned quite a lot about privacy and security these last 3-4 years. I guess I've become a little paranoid from learning more and more about all this stuff.

That's quite bad. If MS comes clean about their failure it means they can't fix it just with updates and patches.

I have actually downloaded the latest Linux Mint distro which I'm thinking about installing in a VM to test and learn running linux. If I decide to go Linux I'm probably going to do dual-booting with a Windows installation for games/programs that I can't run in Linux. I don't know. I have no idea how far Linux has come when it comes to game support/hardware critical software etc.

Plan remains the same, I got ~two years to choose a linux distro and jump ship there.
