Ok after all the hype, this was disappointing.
I actually agree with IGNs 6/10.
I gave it an hour but it’s too janky and rough around the edges.
Glad I waited and didn’t pay money and more than happy to get my 111GB back!
I downloaded this yesterday, after watching a cool boss fight on a stream. Then I watched some more and uninstalled it without even pressing play.
It has all those Asian tropes that annoy me at these games. Mobile style progression gating. The menus are horrible and there are all kind of irritating gameplay mechanics.
Absolutely agree about the menus.
Even the 2nd line of the subtitles are cut off at the bottom of the screen which bothered me way more than it should have done.
I think I was just spoiled by the production values of something like Ghost of Yotei
It could have been a good game if it was singleplayer with a price tag. Unfortunately it isn't. It's a free to play asian mobile game, or at least has the skin of one, over the fairly competent gameplay.
A lot of progression for dump shit, tons of menus to confuse you and a bunch of currencies and other bs. Lots of collect shit on the map and just yeah... it's a lot of busy work.
There's still a decent game buried in there, and if you're a wuxia fan it's worth a try, since there's a lot to like for you. I just wish it wasn't ... this.
I'll continue to play it since I am one of those wuxia fans, and it's a fight to continue, between the charm and the shit. There's some puzzles and other stuff, some of which is difficult to do if you don't know chinese, but there's dark-souls like notes usually that tell you the answer, so it's not too much of an issue.
Game also runs fairly well. So that's a bonus I suppose.
Been reading comments on some videos and it’s a very mixed bag but there are lot of people who seem to really like it. Makes me feel like I wasn’t playing the same game or maybe I just didn’t play it long enough lol.
Like I said, if you like wuxia you're probably going to like it since there's not much alternative anyway, especially in the west. If not, and you're not a mobile game zombie, you're going to be put off, and whilst the combat is competent, there's better alternatives, where you don't have to deal with all the shit that's tacked on.
So yeah, not surprised you bounced off it. Also, yeah 1 hours ain't much. A lot of the skills and everything you get is locked. Hell most of the sword moves I still have locked and I've played 5-6 hours. Mind you, I've not been following the main quest, just did my thing, did some puzzle dungeons and side quest, plus tried to beat a boss that's like 17 levels higher, only to realize after many tries that he doesn't die when the hp bar drops to 0, you fight some minions and then go in to the second phase. Rather unfortunate discovery, so I gave up.
Normal enemies become really spongy as you level up the realm, and that's really disappointing. It might be because I've not been following the main quest to be fair, but it is annoying either way.
Probably like most of these games. They're somewhat of a challenge until you upgrade fully, they most things is trivial. Im betting they want you to feel weak to purchase upgrade mats etc
PVP feels horrible so far. A lot of it might have something to do with people knowing the game from china, and just having the builds, but so far my experience is that every single fight, win or lose in 1v1 arena is a one-sided stomp, where the other person can barely move.
Dunno if it's the latency or whatever but parrying in pvp seems almost impossible as well, at least compared to bosses where it's fairly trivial to chain parry them.
Bosses so far, the 8-10 that I've fought have been fine. Nothing special, but it's a competent enough souls-like there. The environments are quite nice at times, there's some decent environmental storytelling in some story areas and there's a decent bit of eastern-fantasy/mythology.
There's tons of grind, and tons of inconveniences, which whilst not too much of an issue now, I can see them be so in the future, like the whole energy mechanic and all that.
I don't see the point of horses, so far you're faster on foot with the travel abilities and all that.
Normal mobs are boring so far, and they're more or less the same thing, with different skin. There's some variety sure, but it hardly comes in to play.
Way too much dialogue in some quests, especially side quests where it just becomes a chore and I just spam skip. And there's a lot of busy-work quests and activities.
The bounty mechanic for healing injuries and all that is nice, and there's enough people to instantly get a healer, I suppose it's nice for the proffession to be usefull, but realistically, I just find the whole injury system more annoying than anything.
There's a good amount of puzzles, but nothing too hard. Still, the variety and use of skills is nice enough.
The guild search function is terrible. Only a few guilds visible and it pretty much always says they're full.
I don't know what they want to do with sects. I think it's a mistake the make one of them the PVP sect, since it's more about the aesthetic for most people and engaging with the world, but it feels like it's more of a ... join a sect, rank up then quit and go to the next and do the same. I don't like that, and it also doesn't help that not all of them are available from the start.
I despise the menus and their mobile awfulness.
Still haven't played that much of the story, or at least I don't think I did, I honestly have no clue how much of it there is at the start.
Oh yeah, the world level is gated by irl dates, where you couldn't rank up to 5 for the past 2 days. Not a fan, but whatever. Previously you where stuck at 3 for 1 day, so I'm guessing after tomorrow it's going to be 3 or 4 days.
There's too many systems and stuff to upgrade. Most of which I'm not even sure how much they do. It's just a lot of fake complexity.
I dont often say this, but god damn this is a sensory overload and a half. Whole screen is covered in text, directions to chests, to plants, ui elements, constant chatter by different people that stacked etc. Every second step you get something new and seemingly completely random. Game doens't fucking make sense. The one who controls the umbrella has a graceful figure! popping up in the middle of a fortress, like what?
And upgrading gear. Left weapon or right weapon...... What the fuck man. What is left and what is right? Whatever weapon i equip is held in the right hand

In Settings> Game> Guidance Mode pick Free Exploration to remove some of the clutter.
Then in Other> Chat Display choose Exploration Mode to remove the chat.
Again in Other turn off both "Show other players' Signposts" and "Show jianghu wanderers' Signposts" to remove all the shitty signs from players and game NPC's.
Think there was also somewhere to remove the quest icons while still keeping the other UI, but can't find it now. If you want you can completely turn off the UI with F6 too.
Really tried to like this but the translation is atrocious and its so system heavy and non intuitive. Nothing is really self explanatory, you just have to dig through menu upon menu and maybe you stumble upon something to claim or something to upgrade. It's a absolute mess of a game. Game world is OK. It suffers a bit from the same, meaning you don't really visually see exploration stuff often. You just have to stand on that particular pixel that gives you a button prompt.
Gonna shelf this one and it's ok. I rather play HSR, Genshin and Wuva anyway.
