'Fallout: Bakersfield' is a non-commercial 1993' Doom total conversion (GZDoom WAD)

Developed by some guy:

This will probably never see the light of day.

BUT MAN, does it look so... fallout-y!

was just about to do a thread Very Happy it looks absolutely phenomenal, the graphics are such a PEFECT fit, exactly how you would expected FO1-2 to look if they were in 3D.

6.2K likes in 4h. Puts many AAA games to shame.

Gotta love how they start with stating they're not about making a profit and have turned off any kind of monetization on the channel, then directly tells people to support them via some site though Laughing
While i do understand it, it's also kind of weird to make money off someone's elses property. this could potentially put them in trouble, though i don't think Bethesda goes after people usually, and if a project gains such immense positive reaction it will look bad for Bethesda too.

taking bets on it either being vaporware or getting cease & desist'd.

That whole "not for profit but also taking donations" seems shady men.

No way that this is using the doom engine.
Or it should be heavily modded but then why use the doom engine?

This is all bullshit.

noticed that too, lotta voxel? real 3D models which isn't how the doom engine works.
Just adds to the shadiness of the project. Could all be just an blender project render to syphon some donations and disappear.

GZDoom supports 3d models.

there are many gzdoom engine games which looks amazing and nothing like Doom at all.

(this isnt even the best looking one, i've forgotten what the other one with more horror-like environments is called)

He did the graphics for FO: Sonora. Did anyone play it? Seems like a nice TC. https://www.reddit.com/r/classicfallout/comments/1icsjrm/fallout_sonora_review_wow/

he's raised $500 so far. so for a russian like a full month's salary or close to it, decent i guess. that he's russian is likely beneficial haha, its not like he could face something serious if he doesnt give a shit about IP theft i think. But also, being russian and getting support these days, that might be harder than it was 10 years ago lol

I can't quite get excited about projects that have a high chance of not materialising, but it's impressive indeed how the creator has managed to 100% capture the gritty 'n rusty atmosphere of the original games.

Don't underestimate Bethesda, they'd handle things themselves and do a terrific job. Shady Sands would feel more immersive than ever!

Even if this won't... "materialize"...

At least people CAN see WHAT CAN BE MADE and that CREATIVITY is not limited to the safe shite AAA companies throw at us.

Even if as a concept "art", this looks so good, so playable, so close to the source.

Not for me, it is 2025, not 1986.

Graphics are not everything, but this is too much of a step back. No mather how nice it plays.

i really don't agree, i think this looks fantastic graphically. that is some extreme talent. The graphics is what totally sells it, no idea if the gameplay will be even close to as good.

you can show me almost any screen of any recent FO and ask "which game is this?" and i would have no idea (if it doesn't contain actual super specific FO lore). For this TC you could have shown me a random screen with no FO lore and i would directly say "that totally looks like Fallout 1-2 but in 3D, wouldnt surprise me if its a TC of Fallout 1 or 2!", this because its so well done in terms of color and tone.

3D graphics these days, everything looks the same, cant even tell the difference between a $0 budget indie or AAA which cost millions.

Never heard of gzdoom
Fine. But then this isn't a doom total conversion but a random fallout game that is using an modern engine that is designed to emulate Doom.

Why not use a competent engine to make a Fallout game??

its open source, maybe he just likes working in it and has experience with it, or love the aesthetics? overall engine is very, very unimportant as long as you have clear goal of what you want to do and you know its a good fit.

i really dont like the part where he says non-profit and non-commercial and then asks for donations... that's a whole lot of trouble!

Imagine if he's just after money, it will be a very bad look for Bethesda, people will judge them and say "why the hell did you let him continue?", then Bethesda is partially to blame for the scam.

These projects, when using someone's property, i do not think they should be profitable in any way, it doesn't really work and it will draw negative attention from everyone.
