I get that the first game was anything that Ubisoft games aren't (for the most part). But I never understood why people say this game was so good. It has so many obvious flaws, including its Ubisoft-like content.

cuz for the most part its a very high production cinematic game, if u dont like these type of games, as in wat playstation games are, then u dont understand. playing these games feel like playing/watching a great big blockbuster movie, and also why when playstation releases a new exclusive its called an "event". in my opinion these are the true aaa games.
some like their games like this, some like their wall of text games which i never understood the big appeal cuz they feel lifeless, to each his own

I guess some like good stories, tech, etc and some like generic stories and marketing.

This is a problem though. That was the succes of the older Assasins creed games: provide a different setting everytime to keep their games fresh.
Why would someone pay full price for the same game over and over.
Personally the original was good but it had flaws (no challenge, repetitive gameplay and enviroments). It realy got tedious to the end. Doing the same stuff again will not work.

No Ubisoft characters, Ubisoft dialogue, Ubisoft DLC tables, uPlay, Ubisoft optimisation, Ubisoft pricing, Ubisoft DRM, Ubisoft bugs or Ubisoft microtransactions
These alone make any game better, even if the formula is the same for the next 20 times

I hope that they're not planing to go too big. First one really overstayed its welcome towards the end. Side quests became repetitive, new areas were graphically way worse than initial, and combat and enemy variety really did not progress at all. Judging from early gameplay vids, it's all same old, same old.
Another thing that really bothered me with the first one was having all the seasons mixed into one area. Game was touted as a more grounded, realistic approach, and it all fell apart for me with graphical design. You'd have red forest in fall in one area, then you'd ride half a mile and come across a forest in spring, and then a few minutes from that you'd be going through late summer field of grass. It's really common thing in gaming, open world games are usually at fault, Skyrim, for example, did it as well for a few areas. But then you have games like Morrowind and Kingdom Come that manage to appear unified and coherent, and it really makes a difference.

I agree that while the first game was nice and fun, it was also greatly overrated.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.
