I'm not entirely sold for the action RPG in space idea either. It feels like a time waster without a lot of depth. Most of the time spend is looking for loot. Finding energy cores somewhere around a meteor and then going back in time is seriously annoying.
A loot shooter or diablo clone is a better starting point for interesting gameplay for an action RPG imho then a space shooter.
I will give it some time though, it's not that i'm bored playing the game allready.
1000000000 resources to gather, 100000000 upgrades needing 1000000 resources, enemies almost instadie when you shoot in their general direction.
I also need to adjust the T16000 for more precision. The stick controls feel unprecise.
I somehow hoped this would give me a Freespace fix, it doesn’t.
But I’ll suffer a bit more, maybe it will get better and I get used to gameplay mechanics
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Don't use a flightstick, this game is designed for MKB.
It's okish to spend some hours and relaxing. Nothing groundbreaking. The game is barebones. Just shooting and looting. You can only do quest that are all kind off the same. No factions, no morals. The game tells you the story. No real trading either,, it's not designed as a trading game. The looting can get a little tedious and there are some quest that require searching certain bombs en then setting them off with a timer. That is seriously annoying.
The reviews/steam rattings are way overdone but it's not bad either.
I just finished decimating hordes of Okkar scum while pillaging the shipwrecked galaxy, it was..a rather enjoyable space quest albeit with several code red alert warnings.
The game scratches the arcade-y Freelancer itch thanks to its long story-driven campaign, mouse&keyboard-centric fast-paced action and good-looking visuals, including a functioning cockpit view which is always a plus. However, the XPee-based progression focused on artificially elongated tasks and disposable colourful loot definitely makes it feel more mundane than it needs to be
It also means that if you're unlucky enough to be a completionist, you're going to have a pretty bad time here as both the repetitive grind and backtracking can become ridiculous even on Normal. So, the best approach is to focus solely on the main missions + a few side ones and to optimize your ship properly in order to minimize the busy work. Get the upgraded Energy Orbs from Delia, save enough money to buy yourself a nice sturdy Gunship with a solid shield/armor combo, have the Devices fully upgraded (EMP generator/Front Shield generator are a must ), and it's pew pew time. The scaling is sectorial since the open world isn't really open [loading screens intensify] and there are areas that require you to level up before tackling them - still a better option than the full-on level scaling that the game apparently had before the 1.0 version.
Alas, the very casual formula and the lack of Newtonian physics are limiting factors for me that prevent the game from being as engaging as Freespace 1/2 or as immersive as Independence War 2, which is a shame. The derivative story and the bland mini-puzzles don't help either, but it's a polished experience that works for what it is. In today's post-apocalyptic gaming environment where the bar is so low a weasel couldn't squeeze under it, I'd probably fire 7 quantum starcharged exorcist missiles/10
