Now, I have no problem with it not having immersive elements.
But god, tha characters and writing. So cringe.
And I loved Obsidian. Always liked it more than BioWare. Kreia, Mask of the Betrayer .. man. As a kid, that had a hug impact on me.
Fuck these activist writers. Bring back Avellone!
Indeed, it's impressive (as in sad) to see how much Obsidian's writing has declined over the past few years. It was hands down their main strength, as they'd take already proven frameworks and elevate them through meaningful dialogues and memorable characters: MoTB, KoTOR2, New Vegas all felt like the adult counterparts of their predecessors also in terms of quest design/complexity and general branching, with the trademark morality on the grey spectrum to top it off. Alpha Protocol was another notable example, the game had issues but its C&C-y dialogues and tone free from the supervision of virtual committees felt refreshing.
Late Obsidian was also good (Tyranny, Pillars 1/2), at least until the capable people were still in the company and their games weren't meant to please everyone™ yet. Alas, this applies to the modern industry as a whole.
Thankfully, even in these troubled years, we still get some rare and precious exceptions that remind us what competent writing looks like: Disco Elysium, Cyberpunk, KCD 1/2, RDR2, Rogue Trader (which I just started and have been positively impressed with). Whether these will remain pleasant anomalies or not I can't say, but my general feeling is that things aren't bound to improve regardless of external factors. Our best hope probably lies in the hands of AI, as ironic as that sounds.
You namedrop the best of them. I forgot to add Alpha Protocol, which was stellar fun, better than ME (replayed it twice last year). And Tyranny was excellent - a lot better imho then even PoE 1.
But Owlcat is also a great studio, I think Rogue Trader has perfect writing for the setting (and you can in fact roleplay all sorts of characters, I highly recommend the game).
I just want games with mature themes and logical characters. We now get cartoon characters and paper thin villains and a game that preaches instead of immerses. Just fuck off. I am a very right wing guy, but I don't want games to be right wing propaganda. I want games to have deep characters, motivations, lore, etc. I hate this virtue signalling BS. We are adults. Treat us like adults!
It is better than the outer worlds, but it's nowhere near POE/POE2. Avowed suffers from being very limited in scope. Very few classes, very few abilities, very few weapons, very small selection of loot, very little crafting...
