Finished it, I'd give it a 6/10.

Good atmosphere and the story was decent, but the combat mechanics are pretty bad and the game feels unpolished.

what a shitshow of a game lol, i thought the last sherlock game was the last of this shit, at least call of cthulhu had decent everything but this is too unpolished and unplayable even if i like the atmosphere, even the main characters movement seems off. how does shit like this even get release these days

yeah it definitely feels still in prototype stage and unfit for release. It could've used another year, not sure if it'll be properly fixed by the time it hits steam but highly unlikely much will change.

It would've had a much better impression had it not reached higher than it can actually deliver, and gone for a smaller, less copy & pasted world and without the combat altogether.

Frogwares had some interesting ideas here, but sadly the insufficient production values coupled with their inexpertise when it comes to venturing outside the linear adventure genre indeed have awakened Cthulhu's wrath.

The abysmal open world's implementation is the game's biggest enemy. You can turn off the markers and yet it still feels artificially constricted in a way that doesn't reward exploration: NPCs are just there for scenic purposes, there are no dynamic events, districts and their repeating assets feel like they're procedurally generated, visiting key locations is often meaningless since if you don't trigger the right sequence you're just wasting your time. Without mentioning the peashoting, pitiful AI and animations which all have the same depth and consistency as a tacked on UDK student project. It's not even something that patches can fix, since both the level design as a whole and the repetitive investigative bits are severely lacking.

It's a shame because the writing is actually good-ish with reasonably well presented characters (except the protagonist who has the charisma of a sole). The decaying grim mood is pleasant as well..for a while at least. I focused only on the main story and it still felt like a chore to complete, all the positive bits ultimately got dragged down by the Stinking City and its cyclical loops. Five fishmen and a half/10

So.. I've read that all loot respawns immediately. What about enemies? Do they respawn in cleared areas?
Just did the first part (ape-kid) and so far I'm liking it. I have a thing for quirky/buggy/'6 out of 10' games, as long as the subject interests me Laughing
Didn't do much combat yet, apart from 1 monster, but it's clear this is the weakest part of the game...

Yep, the loot respawns every single time (which is silly) while monsters respawn only partially. Those related to the story missions stay dead, though the beasts that live inside the Infested Areas eventually come back to life (at least they did for me). It's easier to just run past them Razz

Don't feel ashamed for turning the combat difficulty to Easy. it really helps get the broken combat over with and carry on with the investigations.

Sounds a bit like Vampyr, where in my opinion the combat was not the highlight of the game, so I preferred story mode in Vampy.

I finished it and actually enjoyed it with combat on easy. And yes the vampyr's combat is way more polished than this.

I'd say if you're looking for a decent story with good writing. it's not gonna blow your mind but it's enjoyable and the atmosphere is there, somehow the wonky NPC's add to it Laughing

There are plenty of moments where you get a hint of what could've been if it had bit more polish with the combat and animations. Like when you're creeping in a building and hear a giant monster around, then it suddenly breaches in and you gotta dip through a hole in the ground. Or when you narrowly miss a monster's projectile vomit and land a headshot with the rifle with little to no ammo left. But these happen when the stars align and with combat on easy, since anything more than easy you're not even sure if you're doing any damage or hitting them at all.

The detective aspect is where it really shines, researching in archives, drawing conclusions etc but It's not actually what I'd call a real challenge but enjoyable nonetheless.

Verdict: fine and atmospheric detective story.iso but far from being worth the asking price, they already made a profit with the epic games deal anyway and it might be a reason the release was rushed, because it's not a finished product.

Not yet finished, but with combat on easy, I'm also enjoying the game. There are some well written (side) quests, although it becomes a bit repetitive after a little while.

Seems this one did not even make it to Steam yet but lists Bigben Interactive as the Publisher so I would assume it is safe from these hijinks at least.

Apparently Frogwares is independent now. The studio had issues with their games being delisted last year as well:

Just get the ISOdemo, there are repacks (Fitgirl, Dodi) containing all the updates and DLCs as well from the Necronomicon Edition. Then if you like it you can buy it in the future when it's available, it's the best service really. Razz

I haven't yarr-ed a release in like 8 years probably Sad , but I just checked the price tag on Origin and it's 49.99 EUR which seems insane for how mid this game was (at least according to reviews) Laughing, I guess I will put it aside for now.

What a shitstorm. . .

Basically the game's fresh feature is the "you have to pinpoint the markers for yourself on the map using descriptions". Which is somewhat interesting.
Other than that:
Fighting is clunky at best.
Story is like whatever.
Numerous bugs
NPCs are really stupid

I was sooo captivated by the fact that you can dive underwater. Well, you can but at certain fixed points and it doesn't really change anything. It doesn't give you the feeling that you are underwater. Sad
