Tag spoilers and keep it spoiled. Quite simple. Doesn't matter how much of a spoiler *you* think it is. Even a grade schooler can understand this much. I'm playing it so i won't go back and see details.
Anyway, game is amazing. I love how it mixes i hesitate to say Dark souls style with JRPG but it works flawlessly. The story is intriguing, but i feel i've gotten the gist of it quite early, will be interesting to see if i'm right or not. Anyway, my worry if anything is that you'll be required to have cheese builds later with advanced setups to do a gazillion damage. It's become more and more like that in the gaming sphere. Sometimes simplistic is the most fun.

Strange game but I love the presentation and art style, I understand basically nothing and the playable character seems to be in the same situation.
Lovely, can't quite time the active defense and parrying rather than brute-forcing and healing up as needed but with some actual reflexes and timing its pretty forgiving once you get into this take of active turn-based combat, or turn based combat with an active defense phase.
Haven't really gotten very far into the game though, reached the early camp area after dealing with some prologue issues involving the battle system, could be a fun little experience and a pretty unique visual trip as well.

This is why this game never interested me, just a rather quick glance and i could directly tell its that typical Final Fantasy dead game world, which I despise. Also the characters and world looked so meh and generic it's not even funny. i mean, i can even dig some generic fantasy stuff, but this has that "let's make it weird because we have no other ideas, hopefully it will come of as ORIGINAL"-tone, very, very unlike something like Elden Ring or why not Morrowind (weird Fantasty but with extremely professional direction)
it's too bad it got good reviews, this means more RPG's will try to lean into this. Devolving even more. Sad.

Sure, this singular indie rpg will ruin the whole of gaming.
Other trends in the gaming industry are a non issue.
It's okay if you dont like a certain artstyle or game but blaming it for future misshaps?
Kinda weird tbh

Well its super artsy fartsy, but that was apparent long ago. Dialogues are q mix og good and nonsensical. Whether the story makes sense in the end is something i'll soon find out. I hobestly think the gameplay is exhausting. So much customization and soon enough parrying is all that matters anyway. Using highlevel skills require a lot of doding and parrying finesse or they'll be worthless on your bars as you won't often have enough AP to use them.

Finished it and I liked the game quite a lot. Has depressing premise for sure and the combat can be quite frustrating, but overall a great game.
Spoiler: |
I admit I was sad they killed Gustave quite soon, but the more you played the more you understand that giving us Verso instead made the game shine on another level.
I really liked the whole premise of loss and accepting loss even though it hurts.
The two endings showed this as well. By keeping the Canvas as is (maybe thinking it's the good ending), you doomed Alicia to slow death. By destroying the Canvas, you forced Alicia to accept the death of Verso and move on with life
Normally I prefer happier games, but I'm glad I gave this a try.

indies is mainly what i play so for me it's important that the good ones is doing good and that's what indies will go for, not this FF-style type of RPG.
As for AAA gaming i'm mostly out, been for years, so i don't care a lot what happens there, this game will not make a difference there i think but it also won't make studios shy away from doing it either ofc.

This is a nice but highly overrated game. It's artsy with lovely music and a cool mix of gameplay mechanics that can easily grip you. But there are enough issues that counter balance its better elements into a good but far from perfect final product.
The first act definitely ends in what can only be described as a storytelling blunder which, from what I gathered, had to do with an actor leaving rather than subverting expectations. But while definitely inspired in some ways by Nier: Automata, Expedition 33 fails on achieving the same level of execution in blending silly elements with deep and philosophical storytelling. The feeling of dread and desperation from the beginning is lost to such a degree that you end up dating and whatnot while facing the apocalypse.
The technical aspects are also up for critique. Its artistic design is impressive, but its visuals are quite dated, yet at the same time quite demanding. On a 4080 super I need DLSS on quality to achieve a 80+ fps in a game where the fires are pretty much sprites from 2010s.
The UI is an obvious console mess and there's nothing more to be said here other than the fact that probably this sold better on PC than consoles...
The gameplay concept is nice, mixing the static and rather stale JRPG combat with engaging Souls-like elements was a stroke of genius. But the execution is far from perfect. For starter, you don't see the enemy's level so you constantly hit brick walls in a trial and error loop to find out if you have a chance or not against many enemies. It's an artificial way to pad the game that ends up discouraging exploration and annoying players.
The enemy's damage is also not properly balanced as too often one hit kills send you back to the beginning without allowing you to learn anything about the timings of the fight. Sure, this is not a problem anymore when you hit for millions at a time, but much of the game you are quite restricted in a very unnatural way.
All in all, it's a good first game, but hardly this perfect masterpiece that so many people talk about. I guess some of these reactions have to do with an anti-Ubisoft sentiment, much like The Outer Worlds benefited greatly from an anti-Bethesda sentiment. I like the game, quite a bit, but music and art style aside, I wasn't so awe struck.

People just want to like these games cause decent jrpg’s are rare. It’s the same as with Metaphor Refantazio. A better game, but not the GOTY some people claim it to be.
Think the concept of jRPG’s is flawed at it’s core, it’s close to impossible to make one with a difficulty that makes sense. This game uses keypressing with reactions, metaphor required game knowledge and cheesing that can’t be known in a first playthrough. And most jRPG’s just require you to grind. All cause the base mechanic of jRPG’s can’t be challenging, the difficulty has to be faked.

Spoiler: | And what a magnificent romance! Schiel wanted to fuck Varo. Sure, why not. We might not live for long, why not enjoy a good fuck. Then suddenly we get to know her dead boyfriend might be resurrected and she says she'd sacrifice my ass to get him back if she could. What a sweet thing to say. Then she asks for a last dicking and i tell her to fuck off (in kinder words) Romance locked in. |
