I think my last topic was deleted somehow - so here's the short and sweet of it.

My HD shows in explorer but when I try and access it I hear a clunk sound, the CPU usage on my comp jumps to 100% and the system locks up. This problem only happens on the one drive.

Needless to say I'm shipping it back to Maxtor but since I cannot access the HD through explorer I feel I may lose all of the data on it.

Anybody know another way to grab data off the HD other then through explorer?

Thanks.

2 things to try: different IDE cable just to make sure and try putting it in the fridge for 10mins and see if you can access and pull the data. needless to say you have to be pretty fast there. after it will most likely be totally dead... Wink

My 200GB maxtor crashed a month ago and the partition table f00ked up. Windows only sees it as a blank partition. So I tried R-Studio from http://www.r-tt.com/ Took it about 3-4 hours scanned the drive and and I was able to recover ALL the files. It has its own file browser, so you don't need to use Windows' Explorer. You can download the trial first to see if you can get any results first.

Get the program what arw said:

http://www.runtime.org

I recoverd like 69gb from the 70gb i had.

Also, try switching powerconnector to your harddisk.
I had the same problem you had with lockups. So i changed powerconnector from the faulty disk with the one from my dvdplayer and the disk worked all of a sudden.

Thanks for the tips.

I'll try those out this weekend.

I'm gonna save the "refrigerator" step for last though Very Happy

I swapped power connector and the drive worked.
I switched it back and it still worked. Confused

At least it works. Laughing

It was probably not sitting as tight as it should. Good for you anyway... Smile
