I'll play it. It is an uncharted clone but I'm ok with it. I find it weird that there's no crosshair in that gameplay though. What's that all about?

The racing scene and the horse chase are looking like they take place in a lane with a less detailed scenery in the background like classic arcade racing games.
So it's not open world i guess??
Sucks, my first impression was that they aimed for a RDR clone. |
That would have been optimal for sure, but i'll likely give it a shot... i guess some events will be closed like that so not entirely open world, but hopefully not small worlds in various chapters, like Uncharted, that i would not classify as open world at all.

They just said at a PAX stream that it's like Mafia 1 and 2, so there is open world that you can explore but they guide you though a linear story. |
from their own web site: https://mafia.2k.com/the-old-country/faq/
"Does Mafia: The Old Country feature an open world?
No. Mafia: The Old Country is a linear, narrative-driven game."
so it's not like Maffia 1-2...

Forget about it then. Why do they even use the Mafia franchise??

Slightly in their defence, they don't call it Mafia 4, they call it "Mafia: the old country", this is in line with how you usually do the naming for a spin-off game, so you say "yes it's a part of this franchise, but its something else than the former games".

The first game is pretty much a linear story as well. There's not much to do in the "open world" other than the optional Lucas Bertone missions.

Mafia was never a truly open world game.
1. Mafia 1 - 'open world' with charm at that time people weren't spoiled by GTA / FarCry / AC games.
2. Mafia 2 - people criticized the so-called open world as empty, disappointing - and they were right!
3. Mafia 3 - who cares
4. Mafia 1 Remake - nice open world but EMPTY and pointless to roam around
Conclusion: when you say open world people expect the absolute best (romances, minigames, hookers, french fries, dynamic events, a living world etc.).
So they would either make:
1. A true open world (aka GTA) - a monumental task that they have NO RESOURCES for!
2. A Uncharted / Tomb Raider / Metro / Deus Ex style game - less resources, more cinematic and detailed, more STORY and leaded narrative.
Their decision to make it liniar is probably the best. 👍

Mafia's open world amounted to little more than window dressing, but it still was a vital part of the experience thanks to the authenticity of the architecture, accurate vehicle physics, police AI and the unforgettable music while roaming around. It boosted the immersion factor up by a few notches, although the game was obviously limited by the hardware constraints of that time*. Then there was the realistic gunplay with its mouse-centric controls, the believable story with no heroes nor over-the-top-ness and...madonn'. We'll never have that ever again.
*Meanwhile in 2025, 23 years after the release of the first game: "I heard you like movies so here, have Indiana Enzo and the Great Cannoli"

I was actually quite OK with that, it suits me better than GTA V AKA The Sims style of forced social things you have to do while you're just trying to find a way to trigger the next story mission.
The only major thing I disliked about the Mafia III were those generic takeover missions which were all quite repetitive and tiresome. I'd also prefer if they added a first person view like GTA V did on PC. The setting and the music were quite cool, unlike this Sicilian setting that sounds boring, IMHO.
