Microchip Breakthrough: World’s First Silicon-Free Processor

Quote:

Chinese university designed 'world's first silicon-free 2D GAAFET transistor,' claims new bismuth-based tech is both the fastest and lowest-power transistor yet
A research team from Peking University has published its findings on a two-dimensional, low-power GAAFET transistor, the first of its kind in the world. Led by Professor Peng Hailin and Qiu Chenguang, the multi-disciplinary team published in Nature, with some team members calling the discovery nothing short of a monumental breakthrough.

The Peking team has fabricated what the paper describes as a "wafer-scale multi-layer-stacked single-crystalline 2D GAA configuration."

"It is the fastest, most efficient transistor ever," said Peng of his team's breakthrough. “If chip innovations based on existing materials are considered a ‘short cut,’ then our development of 2D material-based transistors is akin to ‘changing lanes,’” continues Peng in a statement for Peking University's website (accessed via South China Morning Post).

The team claims to have tested their transistor against products from Intel, TSMC, Samsung, and elsewhere, where it outperformed them under matching operating conditions.

To break down the technobabble, we must start with GAAFET. Gate-all-around field-effect transistors, GAAFET for short, are the next evolution of transistor technology after MOSFETs and FINFETs.

That heavy accent girl's YT channel is full of innovative kinda clickbaity videos about nanotech.

But this particular news is different from others 'cause Chinese researchers jumped the shark and produced not 2-3 nanometers transistors like their several other competitors have done, but they went straight into angstroms. 1 Angstrom is 0.1 of nanometer.

i've stopped watching her videos, nothing ever comes of what she talks about anyways, useless for the most part, maybe a few of these things will show up in 10-20 years.

It's still clickbaity, just clickbaity in an area that overlaps with some tangible 'daily usage' item everyday people use so it seems more relevant to want it not to be clickbait.

But it still is, what they made is not really a tangible usage overlap semiC for anything 'we' use, nor translatable to it. It's also not good at scaling. And is very temperature-dependent..in the range of noticeably below ambient needed.
(from what I have seen of it earlier this month)

So unless the fundamental way we do computer hardware is to change, and it also gets around its limitations beyond the equal to: We made a dead fish tail twitch with a battery in a lab, undead sentient controllable minions soon" vibe.

It's cool research, but there is little actual worth mentioning (yet) development-wise from that research.

Same. She brings up fringe research stuff that isn't even close to being finished this decade if ever (most likely not).
