So I'm running a local 5ghz wifi to stream BluRays etc. to my Fire TV Cube from the PC.
90% of the time the speed is good (north of 100mbit) but randomly it goes down to 15-30mbit, which isn't enough for high bitrate videos.
I got a new modem (Archer MR200) only 4 meters and a wall away and the suitable repeater (RE190) right next to the Cube. Sometimes reconnecting works, sometimes I need to reboot the whole thing. I only have the smartphone and the Fire Cube connected to the 5ghz, everything else is moved to the 2.4ghz.
I don't understand what is causing this. I read online about setting channel and channel width manually, at the moment all is set to auto. What are the best values? I can choose 36-40-44-48 channel and 20-40-80mhz width.

Other than those channel and channel width options, which other network settings do you have on that Fire Cube thingy? Because if it sometimes recovers by itself and sometimes it needs a reboot, it really doesn't seem to be channel/width related.
Have you tried assigning it a fixed IP?

But what you should really do is just Razz

Are both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks named the same and use the same password? If so, change the name of the first or the latter (I use networkname and networkname_5G).

I had similar problems with my TV suddenly dropping connection to the internet and that fixed it.

I would have to drill through the ceiling for a cable, that is a no-go!

It's not the Cube, whenever it gets slow on the Cube it is also slow on the Phone. It's definitely a 5G Wifi issue. It does recover by itself eventually, every time. I forget to mention signal strength also won't change when speed goes down. It is always high, but speed suddenly sucks.
As I said I don't understand. There are only two other 5G networks in a 60m range, I can't believe there is interference. Very weak signals here. One is 160mhz and, the other is 80mhz. They use different channels than I.
My 2.4ghz network is very cluttered with iot devices (over a dozen) can they interfer? But that was the reason I switched to 5ghz in the first place.
Maybe the OneMesh extender is causing issues?

Yes they have seperate SSIDs!

TBH that's router problem, good ones will band steer automatically to the fastest network, my Fritz does it perfectly with all my devices Smile My previous TP-Link Wi-Fi network always had issues. TP-Link for switches is OK, but anything that actually has something to do, no, never again.

It seems the RE190 repeater/extender caused interferences for some reason, it is much more stable now without it. The signal is significantly weaker now (around -70dBm) , but speed is high enough for direct playing 30gb files and no drops so far.
I haven't tested long enough to make final judgement though.

I also talked to a guy irl who sets up networks for corporations and he said a WiFi signal can never be 100% stable, there could always be some random shit that drops the speed from time to time. I told him that expecting a stable 50mbit 5ghz bandwidth over 4 meters distance through a ceiling should not be too much to ask but he disagreed. Do you guys agree, it seemed to me he knows his shit?

In the long run I will probably drill a hole for a cable after all, since it is not too much distance and I could hide it well. I hate that I have to do it but I need a 100% reliability since it is direct play without transcoding and buffers. I don't believe getting a more expensive system like AVM routers is worth it just for streaming to a Fire Cube. If the network guy is right it wouldn't help anyway. For now I will just keep testing without the repeater, so far so good.

Depends on what material your floor is made of. In my parents ye olde house you can easily go through two levels. It's hardboard + wooden beams + woodlayer + sounddampening material + parquet floor and the other floor is the same but with laminate instead of parquet. WLAN is at floor level, and then when you're two levels up (ceiling), you can still get 200 MBit without issues. With concrete it's much more difficult to go through, but one level is OK here. I am getting 300 Mbit through one concrete floor directly above WLAN, and 200 Mbit at the other end of the floor. Two levels up works but speed is not great, around 50. It's always stable here, there's rarely more than 20Mbit difference between speedtests. I do recommend looking at your network channels if you can, and ensure you're not on a channel that everyone uses. For whatever reason almost the entire neighborhood here uses the same channel Laughing Laughing Laughing

But yes, cable is golden. I have a repeater on upper floor, it makes a difference. Most devices I have are cabled anyway.
