So as of today, September 17th, PC players will be forced to install BattlEye anticheat to be able to play GTA Online. Story mode is not affected and it can be toggled off for that mode.
What this means is that after 9 years GTA Online has an actual anticheat, but whether that is going to be effective remains to be seen. It will however hardware-ban anyone caught using mods, effectively making that PC unable to ever play GTA Online regardless of whether it's on a second account or not.
What this also means is that Steam Deck and Linux players are currently out of luck to play GTAO at all. Perhaps there will be a patch for that at some point, but for now those users will be unable to play online.
This is somewhat controversial since BattlEye requires kernel level access to your Windows PC, which is the highest level access a program can have and could be dangerous if the program is ever compromised. Is it worse than what some modders could do? Who knows, but maybe.
On the plus side it's being reported that Gen9 features (E&E/Next-Gen) will finally be coming to PC, but that has not been confirmed as of yet.
This is still a developing story so we'll keep you all updated as more info becomes available. I expect Rockstar to make a statement later today.

Maybe Im weird. Even games I reallllly am looking forward to, I tend not to pay very little attention to until launch day, then decide if I really want it.
There has been nothing from Rockstar for a full 12 months, since Trailer 1.
If not December 27th, surely they have to start talking about it at some point soon, even if it’s just to say it’s delayed to 2026

I look in there from time to time and it's always completely retarded shit they post. The 27 thing originated from an employee's screenshot of their R* merch that accidentally included a Florida trip write up so they figured out some car dealership named 27 autos was behind that and then they just assumed everything was related. The latest one is 'updated links for screenshots' and that one is false also as someone from GTAF is constantly getting news about any changes and there weren't any. Whoever thinks R* is shadow dropping a trailer either believes in a 0.5% chance or is mental.
Some of them are literally kids with all day to spend on this crap.
My take is that if they really stay quiet they are keeping stuff for next year to keep pumping screenshots and trailers and other marketing into people until the release of late 2025, early 2026.
People also keep forgetting that they're Rockstar, they don't follow any standards, timeframes, etc. and they know that regardless they're gonna outsell any other entertainment product ever made.

I enjoyed GTA5. It's one of my top-played games on steam..and the outlier of types of games I have on Steam [most are like Cities Skylinses, factorio, kerbal, ark]
But mine was a different experience. I have 1500+ hours in it, but none of it was single-player. It was all online with friends and sandboxing the world doing goofy shit 80% of the time. I have NO idea what the SP story or game is like.
