Interesting. Seems multiple things crashed for Valve. They didn't seem to have a good story in place for episode 3, they didn't know how to top episode 2 and they were busy for a long time with other games until it became "awkward" to make episode 3.
But this is just weird. I don't think anyone would mind having them release episode 3 even now. I'd play half life 2 all the way in preparation and would love every second in anticipation. I think Alyx hype is a good testament to the fact that Half life hype is still a big thing. The loss is that it's a fucking VR game.
thing with valve and half life is they want to genuinely push the bar with each entry. HL1 was unprecedented, before it there was just doom & quake clones. HL2 had never before seen physics and graphical fidelty that still kinda holds up today. Alyx showed what VR SHOULD BE ABOUT. There truly is nothing like Alyx in VR to this day. Nothing even comes anywhere close. But it also sold indexes.
Since tech kinda plateau'd, I get why they're stuck. Gamers just want another half life no matter the medium, a continuation/conclusion to the story even if it's on garry's mod. But Valve has too much going on to be making games. And when they do they want to make history
As a kid i never started playing HL2 based on the spectacular innovations of physics. While it certainly increased my hype, the fact that i was getting a new half life by valve themselves was what it was all about. This topping themselves each entry is just a thing they've created in their heads. It's unnecessary. At the end of the day, people just want half life.

There are a lot of rumours currently that Valve is working on material properties and that it might be for HL3. Like soaking stuff in gasoline so it can burn, etc.

@Stormwolf
I played it just for the ragdoll and item physics
Same as every other SP game like that I play. I could not tell you anything about the story or plot. I zone out during cutscenes. But the game mechanics and physics probably doubled my finish time by having a lot of fun nailing combine to walls with the rebar gun, knocking them off ledges with the crowbar to watch them pinwheel and ragdoll down to the ground, or playing Plinko with items.
HalfLife 2 was sort of like base gary's mod for me, just with a progress direction to go while doing it..lol
I think my approach to FPS games being like that is from being doom/quake/quake 2, etc my foundational FPS games and playing them for 10 hour runs: NO dialog, no story needed. You spawn in a room, and kill things until the final end screen.
