Nick Perumov is the name, and the books Trilogy is called The Ring of Darkness.
Perumov was able to ignore the copywrite regulations due to its virtual inexistance in early post-perestroyka Russia.
I was fairly impressed by the books and binge-read them within several days back in early 90s
The books have been translated into some Slavic languages, wiki says (Polish, Bulgarian, Slovakian). If you are true fan of Tolkien's, and can read in those languages, I sincerely suggest to give these books a try.
