Hats off to CR, he's fine tuned the playerbase to perfection. As per usual they lubed them up with Citizencon then went in with new ships a month or so later.
A new multicrew mining ship with an onboard refinery was always going to make a killing at $577usd a pop...
It is funny as no one seems to ever mention it since it is not $650 million but 7 Days to Die has been in Alpha almost as long and probably made around $250 million so far with no release date. Team wise Fun Pimps is probably 10-20 devs and CIG is like 1000+ now so it is easy to see where all the money goes.

Nah, no way 7 Days to Die made that much. If we get by the rule "10% of buyers reviewed the game in Steam" with the current 200k total reviews it's 2 million sells. Even at the base price of 23 euros, that's 46 million euros. But it's very often on sale for 4-5 euros, that's how much I got it for few years ago. So let's say average of 10 euros = 20 million. It's still a lot of money, but the game has a lot more stuff to do than many released zombie games. Don't know why they keep calling it "Alpha" when it has more gameplay than Dead Island 2, Dying Light 2 or State of Decay 2.Well, they still have to add a story, but there's many side-quest already.
Star Citizen, on the other hand, is still a 5-10 hours tech demo.
I think I've written this before, but I do enjoy that it's really, really ambitious.
Kinda like 90's time during which new games constantly pushed new boundaries and weren't afraid to go too big for their own good (Molyneux.. ).
I'm not confident this will be an enjoyable game per se, but how far they have come with the whole planetary/space simulation is kind of awesome, isn't it ?

10 years on and those animations are still janky and unnatural as fuck. Just look at how 'fragmented' and stiff they are...
Who wanna bet that this... perpetual, endless delay is also caused not only by complexity and huge scale, but also incompetence?!
Some time ago I watched a "docu-trailer" that talked about (my favorite) FPS camera-shake / head-bob feature. It is something that personally I find very immersive (since the days of Looking Glass).
Long story short, they DID NOT FIND A SOLUTION for people that (can) suffer from motion sickness due to this specific camera movement... so... after A SIGNIFICANT TIME of much analysis, assessment, deliberation and cLeVeR thINKing, they decided to REMOVE IT COMPLETELY(!!!), instead of enabling a simple toggle or intensity slider (Prey 2016 / Dishonored 2).
So now, instead of proper walking around, you just... slide. Muci immersive gaem evah!
i bought some 60 usd "pledge" to play with a friend.
not in my better judgment mind you, i'm sure people have read my thoughts about this game in the past. well, those thoughts didn't change. maybe a little.
this game is hilariously dogshit. like, absolute dogshit.
it's so bad, that i am experiencing hysteria while trying to play it with my friend. i don't think i have laughed so much in a long time, literally everything in this game is not only a massive struggle, it's held together with string and duct tape and i just can't stop laughing at everything popping up constantly. i think we are about -45k in credits now.
absolutely every aspect is tainted by this. there isn't anything that isn't complete dog water except for the actual visuals. performance and stability was actually okay on my radeon.
now i maybe sound angry about it, but i'm not, because the whole time my insides are in fire laughing at all the 1998 MMO problems that should have been tackled in year one.
i get stuck doing everything (it doesn't matter what it is, even dying lol), everything needs a second key press to recognize at random, the map has z-culling issues from the fucking playstation 1 era. shit disappears, reappears, deletes itself on the constant. get in an elevator with someone else and prepare to be shot across the planet.
what are these developers even doing, i don't think i have played a game this trash since.. the 2000s and this is not hyperbole, it's actually on par with battlecruiser 3000AD in my opinion. the only saving grace is that i can experience this masterpiece with my friend.
oh yeah, the best part i think was the time we were doing our first(?) mission once the mission system started actually working for us.
there was some new armor that i really wanted to grab on a body on top of a tower, so against better judgement (after having fiddled with the inventory system for already far too long), i decided to drag a jump suit to replace my existing one
well, that was a mistake
the fucking old jumpsuit was placed in a box below my character and then promptly lifted my character up like a magic carpet and levitated me into the sky. of course, it discarded my entire inventory, armor and everything i had collected over 4 hours, which all fucking exploded in different directions.
it was at this time a storm hits and you arbitrarily can't fucking move properly (surely the default state of the game), so i'm clambering around at -130 celsius or something trying to find my gear.
the gear disappeared and i lost everything.
i've lost everything about 4 times now to various random occurrences.
Every few months when this thread pops to the top due to a new post, I open it, and just sit in fucking amazement for a few minutes absolutely flabbergasted at how this "project" not only continues to exist, but has been applauded at breaking records in scamming such enormous amounts of money from so many people.
I understand what is happening, but my mind just can't comprehend it. It defies all manner of logic.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Don't feel too bad, I got suckered as well. Fortunately, I was able to force them to refund my $60 in time - a few months later they started denying any and all refunds apparently. I dodged a bullet there! Still smile about it whenever I remember.
Shame he got away with so much of other people's money (the initial pledgers, mind you, not those clueless enabling bastards that have sunk hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of dollars on pixels). It just sends the wrong message all around.

i can't imagine how much better it would have been had the money from this been divided up between several other indie developers instead of used to make a pyramid scheme.
gamers are complete suckers for a good story unfortunately

If it had LTI, could've probably sell the pack for a hundred or more... somewhere. Weirdly, this "game" gets more and more expensive. In an year or two even the cheapest package might be 100$, if the whole scheme doesn't collapse by then.

At this point the $10 I spent back in the day feels too expensive for this techdemo/vaporware.
GUYS GUYS ! I CANT BELIEVE IT IT'S FINALLY HERE!!!!
Spoiler:
Oh wait my bad it's just an event where you can try vehicles and get bamboozled into buying them. BTW shame on you if you thought the game was about to release
remind me in 5 years, lock this shit lol, a moment of silence for the 5% of backers who are already dead in the ground and never got to see their demise

As of July/2024, 7 Days to Die finallly launched the 1.0 version. So what's the excuse now?
7 Days to Die was a playable game for a big chunk of that time.
Every time me and friends get the itch to see WTF star citizen is up to, over the last 10 years. Within 4-5 hours we stop playing because other than a beautiful world to walk/fly/poke around in. There is very little meat on the massive beautifully sculpted bones it has.
Every time we go in, we end up saying the same thing:
- Wonder whats been added in the last two years?
- [4 hours later] Nothing really, preeetty much the same as before. But now I can climb ladders in my ship, and walk into caves to shoot at rocks..and look that tree now wiggles in the wind. And you can shoot at enemy NPC's (if you find them) if they dont get stuck in walls, or try to go thru closed doors and just face run into them.
Haven't looked at the funding in a while. At $722M on the website plus the private investment of $63M from a few yrs ago puts this at 785 million us dollars
