Have been watching some footage on youtube lately, but nah...I don't like all that clicking for crew management that much.

I'm afraid it's more 'The Sims', instead of a lightweight SH3 with different focus.

Meh...too bad.

One day...there will be some Silent Hunter, with modern-day VR-implementation and photorealistic gfx.

Only thing you gotta do then is to stay in one room for 2 weeks, don't shave, shower and be sure to eat some moldy bread...immersion 2.0. Ah...and don't forget to pour a bucket of saltwater on your head every 2 mins if you're on watch on the conning tower. :>

Actually the rite of passage in U-boat crews was for officers to show the new sailors the whole boat and make sure that just when they are next to the conning tower's ladder the water pours in on their heads.
Read about it in Herbert Werner's (he was a third watch officer starting in early 1941 and a captain of his own U-boat a few years later) book titled "Iron Coffins". Highly recommended read! Very insightful without much filler, very "meaty".
Actually his first patrol almost killed him. There was a diving drill, the crew had a malfunction and couldn't hold the boat (bouyancy) so they went bow-down into the sea bottom. After removing the water from the bow to the bilge in the middle they tried blowing the tanks but the boat barely moved. So then the chief ordered the crew to go bow-stern, stern-bow for a couple of times and the boat "unlocked" from the bottom of the sea. Bear in mind they had in fact been going up and down since the boat's bow/nose was in the dirt. One of the crew died because of chlorine gas exposure (leak from batteries mixed with salty water pouring inside.)
Also reading this book made me realise that those men were TOP. MEN.

Sure thing, guys! Nice to see some interest to such interesting tales Smile There are many more, actually the transport sinking are the least interesting Laughing There is the thievery and desertion tale - the cook, who always dies in streams of this game Laughing, was stealing food, coffee etc. and Werner was chasing him through northern Poland/Germany at various' girlfriends' houses. The guy was evading him while burglarizing an appartment and later a shop for food. Finally he was found in a ditch where he apparently broke down psychologically and shot himself in the head...but only blinded himself. Werner went to speak to him in the hospital - he insisted that its not him who stole the food from the u-boat and that his burglary was to survive. Then he broke down because he hated the war and was a communist (like his father), decided to end his life. Werner managed to keep the communist part out from the interrogation transcript.

There is also one incident when they were training in the Baltic Sea, close to the shore. They were on the surface and suddenly BOOM. The author quickly realized a submerged u-boat bumped into them. The bow was quickly taking in water, so Werner shouted to the crew to hustle or they will stay there forever. They came out, he sealed the bow and resisted the urge to escape ASAP. He was the first officer there so his duty was to make sure the evacuation went smooth. They managed to get out of the conning tower just in time before the boat sank to the bottom and they had emergency equipment (only the author forgot it). What was fortunate is that the u-boat that almost killed them surfaced and took them home but was oblivious to what he did (not sure how, maybe i remember it wrong) so the captain ripped the "assailants" a new one. What was unfortunate - two guys probably drowned, there were 2 emergency kits floating on the water. They had to drown after getting out of the u-boat.
The best part though? The crew returned and PICKED UP the wreck and delivered it to the dockyard for repairs Shocked Werner noticed that there was a hole on the bow the size of a bucket. He was also angry at himself because in all the evacuation excitement he forgot to close the output hole of the conning tower-radio room communication equipment (like soda cans with string Laughing). Not closing it caused the destruction of the officers quarters and the radio room with all the equipment.

I really recommended reading the book - such a good read. The guy is REALLY making the convoy hunting part seem like an arousing thing. He is geniuinely excited about hunting convoys - probably because of the boredom.

Yeah, i hear you. For me it's like this - damn it all to hell for another goddamned bugged (as it seems right now) ea mess but thank the heavens for another u-boat game/sim. Sad but true. Also the game being in EA wasn't announced just now, it was known before - just saying.

The bad:
- many sh or wolfpack fans are interested in the game and don't seem to realise (or like) the fact that the game is less sim-y and more about crew management. So that's a con for those who expect something like SH or those who don't like micromanaging

My main worry from looking at the videos is they might have added a bunch of extra management related to the crew and the boat, but in a way that many of those new systems are either not interesting to manage (a reason why previous sims abstracted those things) or done in a rather shallow way (with few options and consequences) so managing those would quickly become repetitive and a chore.

Will have to check in-depth reviews before deciding whether to buy this thing or not.

I hadn't really followed it that closely so it was news to me. They need to mark that crap as soon as the store page becomes available - not 3 days prior to it being purchasable.

I'm just tired of all this buggy early access shit. I want to sit down, go balls to the wall, and finish a game the way it was meant to be played - not be fed crap piecemeal for two years straight while they milk sales. Shit should be illegal. It just pissed me off extra this time because another game I was looking forward to (Sigma Theory) pulled the same shit just a week prior.

I already loved that they delved into crew management. One of the things that was more annoying for me playing silent hunter was the huge time traveling until I could find a ship. And now with crew management I hope this part becomes more interesting. I buy for sure.

yes that one. at the time people said it was the best sub sim around, oh, wow 2017 release, could have sworn it was older

didnt have súch crew survival minigame though i think, could offer some story line potential but how to make it so its doesnt feel like a mobile game and not repetitive will be tricky

they going the hardcore sim route ? or also an arcade option?

I have it but haven't played it yet. A friend of mine says it is a tougher sim. Its predecessor, Atlantic Fleet (https://store.steampowered.com/app/420440/Atlantic_Fleet/) was supposedly in the same category. You might be thinking of that one for your original timeframe

Personally, I would love another SH. I never played SH3 and heard it was the best. I REALLY liked SH4 and tried playing SH5 last week and was not happy with the interface, mechanics and the changes since SH4.

Even better, I would LOVE a Carrier sim or Destroyer sim, like Epyx's Destroyer game from the Commodore 64 days. Ever since I left the Navy, I have really enjoyed playing naval sims.

Thanks for the info!

Fleet Command I own. That was a lot of fun. I also played Carriers at War. Haven't heard of 5th fleet.

I've heard of most of the games in the Wargamer links. Both Victory at Sea games were fun. Some of those others I haven't heard of.

I am looking forward to Carrier Battles 4 for the PC.

I do get some of the naval fix with Order of Battle and Strategic Command.

Gave it a try...

Tried is the keyword here...

Started the tutorial and I got upto "Blow the ballasts and surface" (something like that).

The game tells you where to do what, except, nothing happens. THe guy turns some valves, says something in German; "Anblasen", but nothing happens. You sit on the seabed and your compressed air is going down and there is no indication of what is going on.

Oh, and I am not a big fan of all the "Ze Sims in a Boat" type of gameplay.

Same thing happened to me in the beta. When I zoomed out, I saw that I was on the cocean floor. nothing happened when I tried to surface and I zoomed in to make sure I was blowing the ballasts. I quit after that.

Yeah, struggled at that part but the key was to turn on that electric engine or something to build up pressure... also blowing the ballast has some lag time... so you should give it a bit unlike I was doing: blasting and flooding thinking why the fuck it wasn't shooting to the surface from the get go Laughing

It is a rough game, but I've been starving for some sub action so quite enjoying myself with it today.

To anyone interested in it: unless you really want to fund their development wait for a purchase.
There's always the iso to check it out no?

Yay !

I've been playing this time to time throughout the development, all I can say is this game is a Masterpiece.
They took their time but at least they done it right, unlike Ubisoft who let down their last Silent Hunter game.

This IS the proper new Silent Hunter simulation for you !

Time to watch Das Boot movie again Very Happy
