Finally played it, what a barebones experience. Very short campaign, small hubs (they tried to put a lot of detail into them which was nice).
Fighting was okayish, guns weren't terrible. But it felt like those hollywood movies after a ton of reshoots, just very stripped down just to get it across the finish line.
But is it better than Dying Light 2 or...?

The edge this one has over DL2 is the flesh gore system and more detailed environments (much smaller obv). The star of the show really is just killing zombies as there isn't much to the story or characters.

while not the same, they did add a gore update similar to DI2's
I'm almost done completing the game on PS5, and I'm having a blast. I like it way more then Dying Light. Killing zombies in all sorts of creative ways never gets boring. The gore is insane in this game, they really put some effort in it. The environments are very detailed and different. The story and character are quite simple but I like the humor they put in, it's doesn't take itself so serious That and 60FPS with good graphics makes it worth my money (bought it for €25,-).
Yes, loved bashing and dismembering zombies.
But game felt really short. They tried artificially increasing the length by adding side quests but backtracking is so terrible. Still, I finished it at 99%, only not getting couple chests, but wished a lot more areas.

Agreed, at the end of the day I found both the games underwhelming for different (yet similar) reasons, but at least Dead Island 2 doesn't try to bite off more than it can chew huehue and does its own simple bombastic zombie-bashing thing in a competent-ish way with no extra annoyances or grinding sessions.
Dying Light 2 on the other hand is built from the ground up to follow the Ubisoft design with extra tediousness such as hundreds of colourful copy-pasted activities, disposable items, dull quests, dragging dialogues written by AI-like entities and so on. The recent patches have improved melee combat, but it still feels rather weak and awkward/artificial which is a capital sin since the game completely revolves around that.

i would say its ultimately matter of expectations
they are both kinda 7/10 not amazing , but pretty fun titles with some glarring issue
the difference is that
with DL2 everyone expected it to be the "next step up from DL2", which it wasnt and was just OK
with DI2 everyone expected absolute disaster , which it surprisingly wasnt and was OK with fun gore system
=> ultimately lot would say DL2 is better game , but the perception is warped by the expacations of one being positive and one negative surprise
i'd also argue that despite "muh zombies" both games cater to a different audience
di2 is the call of duty of zombie slashers (refined but shallow/dull)
dl2 is (or tries to be) more akin to Arkane style fps (janky but "deeper" --and i know i will get derped for that word)
if that makes any sense. dl2 i finished despite its many flaws
I played both. Prefer Dying Light 2 by a wide margin.
- Dead Island looks sharper, but the entire experience feels way more static and less immersive
- Gore system is more detailed in Dead Island, but I felt Dying Light 2 had more oomph in weapon impacts, and the gore system there felt more dynamic. Dead Island gore is sharp, but feels kind of pre-baked.
- Open world feels 100x more alive in Dying Light than Dead Island
- Dead Island Storytelling feels like cringy budget hollywood. Dying Lights story is not particularily great, but at least they kept it gritty. I guess this is a matter of taste though.

I prefer this over Dying Light 2 by many a mile - its got better combat and focuses on the combat and environments rather than open-world time waste filler. Sure, the scope and story was lacking, but it played to its strengths from start to finish.
Maybe with this finally dropping on Steam in a few days they'll yank Denuvo out of it sooner or later and I'll get to try the DLCs (though I'm not expecting too much on that front).

Jumped on the Steam page (disappointed to still see the Denuvo tag on there ). Glanced at the discussions forum only to find topic after topic of poor German players unable to buy an uncut version of the game, with even CDKeys refunding orders from German customers.
What fucking shambles that government must be in if that's where their priorities lie. Though the US is headed in that direction at a rapid pace as well, with many porn networks blocking access in certain states. Sad state of affairs the internet has become with people unable to mind their own fucking business.
