From a cursory glance it kind of feels like the game doesn't know what it wants to be. The switch puzzles, if anything, would probably kill the FPS pacing. Will try it out later, regardless.

Well the game doesn't look particularly good.. doesn't look terrible either. Some people are gonna like it others say its trash.
The inventory system is puzzling especially for a "retro" game-why make the player switch weapons in and out of the inventory with limited slots when number keys 1-10 work perfectly fine and have for decades? I guess for console gamers but they aren't gonna be buying this en masse anyways, plus you could have used a weapon wheel like most of these games do AFAIK.
And why have a stamina system? These modern elements they added are basically the worst kind of modernization you could do for a game like this.
And it looks like you can't just save and load your progress at will? Another dumb design choice.
The combat has no weight behind it and the game doesn't respect your time at all. You lose an enormous amount of money on death and you end up having to break a ton of barrels and crates in search for money, hp/mana and ammo.
This is from the Lead Dev from Graven about a MAP?
"The map feature was very labor intensive to maintain and as a feature didn't properly support later levels. The people who would implement those aspects were working on much more important features. We opted for the other features."
The map was removed in favor of improving other areas/features.
On a related note, according to several sites both 3D Realms and Slipgate were recently hit by multiple layoff waves and some projects were also put on hold, so it's (probably) safe not to expect much from this game in terms of miracle patching either.
Several 3D Realms games are exiting early access in january, devs are probably forced to push them out in whatever state they are, before they get boot in the ass
Shame, these guys were publishing a handful of pretty interesting games. I guess retro fps isn't profitable, 2024 u have to make open world buttonmash, survival Durr hurr unfortunately.
Well I think Ion Fury and expansion were excellent. I had this wishlisted but think it's been unfinished / rushed, all i wanted here was a belated hexen sequel with a different name. Phantom Fury looks good and so does Tempest Rising, hoping the latter does well but doubt it.
I see this publisher as genuinely making good games, but by not focusing on live-service, MTX casino and all the other horrible shit out there means this is probably a failing strategy.
Cultic i think is by far the best of the bunch so far. Ion Fury was great but i couldn't stand the expansion for some reason-vehicles suck and maps were too wide open maybe?

I second this. Somethow Ion Fury was a miss for me, but Cultic... I finished and like it.
And Graven - yeah, I had hopes...

Hey dont be so hard the little console eunuchs, they need time to aim their lil vibratin thumbstick.
I'll pickup cultic, looking at the 3d Realms catalogue. They are just solid classic style PC games and priced correctly.
- Ghostrunner was also good.
- Wrath: Aeon of Ruins has been in dev too long but is pretty good.
- The rest are just republishing the classics.
Ya I guess they overextended the budget and failed with the early bombshell releases, Rad Rodgers and Graven. I'm sick to death of live service games, lazy survival grinding games and the vast majority of anything open-world.
Hopefully 3D Realms' problems won't affect the release of Cultic's second chapter, the game was entertaining indeed with its straightforward yet atmospheric immersive-sim-lite-y approach and definitely deserves some love.
I'd recommend Apogee's Turbo Overkill too if you don't mind the aggressive visual style and extra-hectic action, there's plenty of fun to be had along with a nice variety of settings/gory moves that encourage mobility. With the Tripe-A industry in such a miserable state, the indie world is single-handedly keeping the classic FPS genre afloat.
Yeah Cultic was even more impressive after you find out it was made by one fucking dev. Even the music which was very well done. I didn't get that much Blood vibes from it though (aside from the guys in robes of course) it feels like its own thing with the dodge/slide and rhythm based gameplay (enemies shoot in bursts and you are free to move to different cover after they take a few shots). And the dynamite is not nearly as well done as Blood.. why has no other game topped or even matched Blood in that regard
After Cultic was finished (5 hours or so) i finally played through Dusk as well, and almost stopped playing it like i usually do in the first 2 hours.. but i finally pushed through and wow I really enjoyed it. The updated "HD" models were an improvement IMO especially the weapon models.
Some amazing mind fuck moments and maps towards the middle-end of the game. Those 2 games are some of the best 5-6 hours (each) i've spent recently playing games.
