These guys and their modding tools... how is it we're this many years into modding games and it's still in disarray. MO2 is still the best anyway, but we mustn't acknowledge that!
I'm surprised that 'Seb' (author of Mod Organizer) lasted as long as he did, he's an asshole
God i hate mod organizers. i only use them when there's no work-around to installing manually.
Gotta love how they now also take control over the .ini files so you can never give advice about editing them to someone who has issues because you have no idea where they are for this user. Then there are the ini editors which many seems to install who might also take control and make their .ini's the default ones for the games, so some users have 3 places with .ini's.
From experience, 99% the only relevant ini's are at
C:\Users\user\Documents\My Games\<bethesdagame>
But it's true that sometimes they get fucked with, for example on FO3 MO2 has this stupid tendency to do toggle
bLoadFaceGenHeadEGTFiles
to 0, which results in stupid body/face mismatches.
So you need to force your ini files to read only

There are many mods for combat too though. Not sure how much it fixes it, but from the many videos i've seen in r/skyrimmods it looks very much like Dark Souls, but i bet it's not AS good.
Elden Ring is a very different game than TES though, they're both open world games, but at least TES never feels like a MMO-world without players, which Elden Ring unfortunately can feel like sometimes.
Tried the 'Anniversary GOG Edition' (The.Elder.Scrolls.V.Skyrim.Special.Edition.v1.6.659.0.8.59094-GOG) but some things were really fubar...
Some questions for men (with ultra-wide displays) that still play this:
1. Is there no support for ultra-wide resolution?
- if I force ultrawide resolution via skyrimprefs.ini, some UI menus in game are huge / zoomed in / out of screen
2. No raw mouse input?
- mouse feels weird, like being limited in speed (has some weird form of acceleration?)
- tested a ton of ini commands with no luck, mouse look feels really off (unplayable)
3. Is Vortex the best tool to install mods?
- or is there another one recommended / more popular
4. Is the Skyrim Special Edition Nexus a source for mods for Anniversary Edition?!
- are all SE mods compatible with AE?
5. Is the Survival mode really worth playing or it is just wasting your time?
- how do you travel / fast travel so you don't waste a lot of time?
- can you QUICKSAVE while in Survival mode?
- does it make the game really immersive or it's a eat / sleep / repeat simulator?
5. I'd use Frostfall or Sunhelm instead of the official mod. iNeed is good too.
The problem with all of them is that the world is so full of resources, it hardly matters. But if you use a mod to make food more scarce + food decay, it adds challenge. It's mostly pointless though. The only challenging bit is staying warm, but you can configure all that in the mod settings. Same for fast travel etc, where it exists.
What I think is the worst aspect of this overall is including all the paid and free content in the same menu. So when you go and download the latest and greatest free mod for skyrim you're gonna have to scroll past a bunch of paid mods and this will likely only become worse as more and more creators join the program and start posting their own paid mods. Hopefully at some point modders will come to the rescue and add a mod that will actually separate the free and paid content into separate menus like it was before

It's so frustrating Bethesda are so fucking hopeless. They can google their own game and see what the community and players want their games to be and STILL completely turd out the least innovative crap games imaginable in response.
A 2024 full modlist in Skyrim is quite good, animations better/fixed, combat is completely replaced from original and good, third person gameplay is pretty much preferred, you can make it soulslike if thats your thing, the spell system completely reworked, the RPG elements and skills completely reworked, deep crafting, deeper survival mechanics, the graphics can look reasonably modern.
I can genuinely say with full mods i actually really like the gameplay in modded Skyrim. The only major problem are the boring as fuck questlines you've already played that weren't that compelling to begin with, i just cannot handle any of the familiar quests to ever play it again. I would play one of the full conversions but as far as i can tell you can't easily inject 350 mods into the full conversions so it's not the same thing.
All they need to do is work on the engine strengths. Add proper in-engine cutscenes and open it up to modders in the creation kit (this is a necessity looking at all competing games of the genre), Hire a competent writing team and completely rethink the story telling and the way they present main quest-line. Even BG3 wipes the floor with all their games in the way they present the main story and it's a turn-based iso game. It's just really odd to see a company with such a unique differentiator in its community and mod support have no clue how to capitalise on it and make money.
Those things come from making good/successful games. They've got it so easy here, all the in demand features are sitting there to download on Nexus. Even If they simply made their campaign more cinematic with cutscenes like most modern games (Witcher, BG3/Divinity, GTA, RDR, Cyberpunk... basically the last 10 years of games) reviewers would be saying they have invented the RPGs.
They just spent 7 years on a worse reskinned 20 year old game with 7x loading screens and still no mod tools
only the most deluded beth fanboys even played the last 3 games they released.
