"If someone can fear losing his job or his home then i think it's fairly rational to say any sane person can fear losing his life, seizing to exist.. It also seems rather selfish to believe that death is only about you, it's not. To fear what will happen to people you can no longer help etc, that's also a part of fearing death."
so no, im not talking about going around being afraid to get run over by a truck or being afraid of getting a deadly cancer, that's something else. i'm talking about being afraid of seizing to exist and why it's rational.
So tbh I'm not sure what kind of fear you are talking about if it's not that, i'm very doubtful something else is common? I think you've either misunderstood what people are fearing with death, or this is just your defence mechanism against the fear of dying, fully rational too though, so nothing wrong in that, i have several of my own.
If you are really speaking "in general terms" then you surely mean people in general? Then i don't agree because i do think people in general fear death because of the reasons i mentioned, not because they fear death as some kind of experience in eternity. My mother is ill and dying, so i know what kind of fears she has, and it really doesn't revolve around her too much.
But if you don't understand that your death is not only about you, but about the people you leave behind (maybe kids, a wife or a close friend, a pet - it's very individual i think) then i think your view will eventually change?
There are documentaries and interviews with dying people and their fears of non-existence etc... Watch a few of those perhaps, i think it's pretty heavy stuff personally but i've endured a few.
Yes, living forever vs death forever, it's not really a choice we have to make, to me neither is optimal (which is a bit of a paradox.)
I think 70-100 years is way too little life. "I want more life, fucker!" i'm greedy and i'm me, it's all i know, i want that to continue, not forever but perhaps until i decide it's all shit for a very extended period of time, then i can embrace death to live happy and then die and be happy that you die "because my life was good!", no, i don't think that works, if anything that will be more painful than to die because everything is just shit.
but i guess there's really no "general" thing about it.. there are obviously old people in tremendous pain and tremendous boredom, who gladly just embraces death.
Why so aggressive, name calling and what not? I've kept it civil even if i don't agree at all with you.
"In general" means exactly that. A general opinion of something means you believe most people think something, no?
yes the fear of dying is just that, fear of losing ones existence to not be able to for example help any more, it's both about others and about yourself (since it's you going, not them). But it can also be about not being, not being a part of the only thing you know, which is life.
But whatever man, not gonna argue with you, it's too touchy for you it seems. I'll leave it at that.
