BG3 earned it. It would' be awful if stale corpo slop like Starfield was shilled to the top.

They really ignored Hogwarts entirely, it seems. The prestige of the gaming press just goes higher and higher

Well it surely could've been nominated in some category.
Alan Wake 2 surely doesn't deserve so much nominations.
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D / MSI Gaming X Slim GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER / ASRock B650 PRO RS / Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360 / G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo 2x16GB DDR5-6000 CL30 / Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB / SeaSonic VERTEX GX-850 850W Gold / Lian Li LANCOOL 216

Hogwarts was by the numbers as they come, im not saying it was a quality game. Im saying its a game that you'd normally see nominated by these people. At least in some cathegory here and there. They absolutely are "boycotting" the game in their minds.

Yep, no chance it wouldn't be elected if it wasn't for any boycotting. Personal feelings about the game doesn't matter, its plainly a typical candidate for these things

How exactly doesn't it? Most of the categories it was nominated for it is objectively great at, as the art direction and audio are stellar and carry the game, the writing is also for the most part good. If your narrative competitors are FFXVI, BG3, a dlc for Cyberpunk and Spider-Man, I think it should just win by default cause all of those don't deserve to be there. You can maybe argue the Best Action-Adventure and Best game of the year, but then again, I didn't care for/didn't like any of the other nominees, so it isn't like it was a stellar year or anything, despite what some people seem to think... so it comes down to taste, and at that point... I mean you can argue for any of the contenders to be/not be there.

It's a pointless popularity contest as per usual, not unlike any other awards show in entertainment
I mean "Best Sim / Strategy" has Cities: Skylines II in it
that's a complete joke, rather leave that spot empty than force one of the worst games of the year into it
and Phantom Liberty should have covered far more categories than just "Best Narrative" and "Best Performance" by Idris Elba no less, what about Minji Chang who did a VO performance that you maybe find in about 1 out of 1000 games?
PL should be in Best Score and Music, Best Game Direction, Best Action / Adventure (or Best RPG?, certainly over Starfield).
I suppose Expansion Packs don't qualify for GOTY? Cause PL def deserves it more than a friggin Re4make or Botw 2. Good games but.. one is literally just a remake and the other a straight forward continuation of the formula.
But nah, gotta have Alan Wake 2 in every category suddenly, including best score? what? I love Remedy games and it's really good and deserves plenty of nods, but it's in everything including Goty? How?
And ToTK ofc because BotW: The Expansion has really left a massive impact on gaming this year... really changed up that formula.. not like playing Botw all over again with some DLC
Just the usual lists thrown together by people who probably play 2 hours of games a week and just listen to the latest "whats hot" and how to play politics
And absolutely agree, Hogwart's Legacy was a forgettable game but 100% the type of game they include in such ceremonies. By sales numbers and hype alone. But we see Starfield and Cities Skylines 2 over that game because.. politics and shit.
Shows you how much such things matter. Shame it's gonna push sales on any nominated games and certainly on any winners.
Hi-Fi Rush also is a more meaningful contender for Goty than half the games on there
Super Mario Bros. Wonder, really?! REALLY?!
Even giving a game like that a chance to win. Imagine the statement
"Look at all these innovative, impactful, beautifully written and designed games that had so many people pour their hearts and souls into it, including real actors. But you know who really deserves it? That cutesie sidescroller that is the 100th iteration of it's own formula! That's the GAME OF THE YEAR!"

I don't think so. Kong is made by some no name. Everyone can make shit games and there are plenty of them to pick from. Gollum is made by Daedalic. We expected something better even if maybe full 3D is not exactly what we usually get from them

Winners are determined by a blended vote between the voting jury (90%) and public fan voting (10%). Fans can vote for their favorite games on TheGameAwards.com and on our Discord server. In China fans can vote on the winners via Bilibili, WeChat, and other platforms. Fan voting closes on Wednesday, December 6 at 6 pm PT. |
I understand the reasoning behind it but 10% seems way too low.

its enough. maybe the only thing worst that modern journalists are the hordes of fanatical console warriors. When last of us 2 and tsushima launched, each game's cult of retards were trying to one up the other in votes. It got so ridiculous, even Druckman tweeted something with the meaning "go forth, my army of stupid and vote for my game so we can win and the other one loses". He later deleted it, probably someone with a semi functional brain went and slapped him upside the head. This is what you're gonna get if you let people vote. Then you'll also have nintendo people, who think RE4 invented all of 3rd person gaming and is the most influential game of all time, that Mario iteration 82762362 is a great game and Zelda rewrote the rules in open world design. They're still waiting for the industry to copy that paradigm shift yet, 6 yrs later. Any day now

Good to know, taking 3 years to patch a game and release 1 story DLC to end that patch cycle means you qualify for Best Ongoing Game. Never let us down Dorito Pope.

I dont think its that, I dont think its an active (or even passive) boycotting.
IMO I agree, or at least on the same lines as, other comments here. It was (minus the brand Hogwarts on it) generic and forgettable. The most boilerplate gameplay for its genre, with boilerplate mechanics and gameplay, just with Harry Potter graphics put on it.
Like it was a 'generic open-world action RPG' engine with Harry Potter Graphics mod, added.
But overall, hasn't these type of game awards (since gaming became mainstream 10+ years ago) been nothing but like every other entertainment awards? The Oscars, Emmy's, Tony Awards, and so on? An industry gathering to smell their own farts and pats on the back of self importance?
Not since oooold G4 tv station was around do I think they represent anything close to what the gamers think and judge as good games. its always like tv/movie awards: Which was the biggest, or made by the most connected. Not which is actually best.

It's a mediocre Ubisoft-like game carried by the magic of the books and the movies.
That being said, it's the kind of game you always find on the list of these fake awards. The game was clearly disregarded because of "political" reasons.
