I just thought this would be a very interesting comparison to make:
Take a look at this screenshot (taken in 2004 as it states in the lower right).
Pay particular attention to the folliage/tree/stone/mushroom textures.
http://www.elderscrolls.com/images/art/ob_pc/obliv01B.jpg
Now take a look at this screenshot (taken in 2006, NEARLY 2 years later).
Compare the textures in this one, what we are getting, to what they released 2 years ago.
http://www.elderscrolls.com/images/art/ob_pc/obliv31B.jpg
Can someone say false fucking marketing?
What happened Bethesda? How is it that 2 YEARS LATER..the textures got so much blander? 2 years is a long time in graphical standards, and yet.....such a decline.
Still looks nice sure, but I thought more people ought to be aware of the subtle tricks publishers/developers use in order to sell their games. Keep in mind, this was done imperceptibly over the span of 2 years, thus you really wouldn't notice it until you did a sidebyside comparison like this. Just food for thought.

Looks the same to me. The newer one is a higher resolution so its easier to noticed more details. I think in the past 2 years, they've been working to make it playable. I'm sure the FPS was horrible back then. Don't compare Oblivion to itself 2 years ago to challenge the devs skill. Compare Oblivion to other games that have been released to measure the devs graphical improvenment (over other games or previously released Bethesda games)

The 2006 pictures is what, 3 x as big as the 2004 one, of course it wont look exactly as sharp or as good. Compare your 2004 screen to http://media.pc.ign.com/media/702/702491/img_3442822.html instead, really good texture on that tree even up close.

Perhaps trick wasn't the right word.
More of a "graphically misleading representation of obtainable/playable graphics.".
I mean c'mon, think back to your PC specs in 2004. There is no way in HELL you would be getting more than 5 fps in that STANDING STILL. Even today, graphics like that demand a pretty high end PC to obtain PLAYABLE framerates. And that's two years later.
That doesn't seem just a LITTLE BIT underhanded and dirty to you Quickstar? Not a little bit?
C'mon now...all bias towards the greatness of this title aside...you have to admit that's kinda low on Bethesda's part. Not that other devs. don't do it, but I don't know, I just kinda expected better of them.
By the way, was Bethisda always owned by Zenimax Media....or did they sell out?

..the viewing distance of foliage / grass is also much improved in the new screenshots, just look at the grass in the 2004 screen, really bad viewing distance of it.

2004 pic looks less realistic to me, grass has no variaty, too dense for a forest like that. 2006 pic on the other hand looks just like a real deal, grass is less dense, it is all kind of shapes and even has some mushrooms hiding in it
And textures look the same.

People are getting very creative while they are waiting for games to come out. This thread can win every photoshop contest out there.

Very true that. It wont be long before someone posts an image and eventually it will turn out to be genuine but people will probably still dismiss it as a fake at first lol
May the NFOrce be with you always.
