I did another take, this time hiring the Ukrainan girl and Ivan for 3 days at the start just to get their weapons and it made the beginning a lot smoother. That, plus learning the ins and outs of the game, has made it perhaps too easy now. I can see a full squad of silenced snipers being very cheesy. Personally, I'll just use one to keep it more interesting.
It's a far cry from JA2 1.13, but it's enjoyable enough even with almost every aspect being inferior.

I don't know it just doesn't have that Jagged alliance feel to me, its more like X-COM re-skin, but I did start a tutorial mission so I haven't seen the the real gameplay yet.

It has more of a Wasteland 3 feel to the combat and not the new x-com/xcom. The only thing from it is the enemy "take cover" phase.

well the first game that had that move and shoot range shown was x-com, and yes the cover when they see you, I didn't see that in any jagged alliance game, I think they should have given the opponent full turn not just hide and wait, if they notice you they cover and shoot. That would be more suited for this game.

I've been isotesting the game for a while, it's (as expected) not as thorough or interesting as JA2 1.13 but it's far better than any "Jagged Alliance" game released in the past twenty years, which is already an achievement in itself despite the very low bar
Although there are annoyances and streamlined bits such as the rough stealth system, the several small-ish areas, instances where the AI is awkwardly suicidal and so on, the core experience works well and clearing out the big map is quite addictive. The combat system sits in between the classic JA2 and Wasteland 3 in terms of AP management with actual bullet simulation/destructible covers, the campy humour typical of the series and decent production values as per Haemimont tradition with some nice attention to detail. The game can be hit-and-miss (in a literal sense also) but overall, I'd say it's fairly competent and enjoyable as a time-sinker.
Edit:
There's this mod as well in case anyone wants to have full control of the action, though it makes things a tad too easy: https://www.nexusmods.com/jaggedalliance3/mods/2
Also, in order to have a more tacticool(tm)-friendly positioning: https://www.nexusmods.com/jaggedalliance3/mods/13

Met my first RPG holding enemies. Fuck that, if anything this shit should be patched, they just spam rocket attacks every turn. Hahaha, nope. Making them low hp is not a solution. First time I had to save-scum a fight.

My save got corrupted, some other nuisances got in the way, but I still thoroughly enjoy it. But the game definitely needs some patches and not only for bug fixes. Some systems need to be tweaked/improved.

My face when I first saw an RPG fire from the other side of the map and hit Bun's face with 100% accuracy. Then it happened again in the same round.

I like the "drop everything" mod. It might make the game a bit easier, but you got ammo to use the machineguns and have some fun.

Seems like most popular mods are just mods that make the game easier. Like infinite mines, full damage on burst fire, showing hit chances etc.

showing hit chances I'd say should've been part of the game. calling off a shot or positioning better is better time spent than just save scumming.
knowing that the mod exists made me reconsider playing the game or not.

I couldn't understand why people were having money problems, I never had any issues, and halfway through I'm swimming in cash. Turns out the leadership stat governs traveling speed, the highest in each merc group counts. I maxed my Imp merc in leadership, and can travel up to 4 times faster than those who didn't. There are not a lot of Mercs in Aim with high leadership, Raider is the only really high below the gold mercs.

I overall don't understand why people are having so much hard time in this game. The beginning is quite hard, yeah. But when you find at least two rifles and mod them with silencers, position your soldiers properly you are ready to go.
People write - OMG it's not 1.13. But I doubt that people who write it even played it. You didn't have chance to hit in JA2, you would know to have diverse team with a doctor, mechanic and explosives expert. And 1.13 was hard as fuck. I finished first map in it by killing a guy with trench shovel because I didn't have any ammo.
In JA3 I have taken over half the map, have 500K of cash and fuckton of ammo.
Position your troops, single shot everything, take cover, stealth the shit of the map and attack at night. The only problematic situations I got are when there are enemy patrols that attack my positions because there is little time to react and position.
Overall a very good game. Best JA since 2. Janky here and there, enemies with explosives are fucking irritating but manageable. The main story is quite good with a few twists, I like choice and consequence here. The sidequest are a little pop-culture gimmicks though.

Also mercenary training. Wisdom is very important, as it increases learning rate, and your trainer needs the Training perk to double the speed.
As usual with games like this, I look on youtube and steam forum for some general starting tips, like which mercs to take and skills to focus on. (I don't really like restarting over a game after spending a dozen or so hours in already 😉)
Also I thought this game had global timers, but that's more about handling contracts and running out of money. But I don't think there are quests that expire?
Do enemies frequently reconquer your areas, btw, or only once, as part of those shields on a control post you got to remove?
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

I don't really know about global timers. There is at least one quest that I think is about some place being attacked (not to spoil it) but there is just a group walking torward it. But as soon as you get to the place while the army is still coming the combat starts even if they are couple of days away.
And one quest where a city is attacked but it's triggered by talking to NPC and you will have enough time to train militia.
The other quests are triggered via entering some places and talking to NPC, at least I think so.
There are multiple attacks on liberated places.

There are several event timers and also quests that expire because of those timers. If it seems something might be time critical, it probably is.

Thanks!
Yeah, the militia training before the attack was happened in the tutorial area. Was wondering if the main game had similar events.
