finished it today

it was a weird one

entertaining story, with faults, a good cast of characters, lots and lots of cutscenes, so that's all good and a big improvement over XV.
literally some of the most epic cutscenes and battles I've ever seen.

But then there's barely any RPG in here and what is there feels fake, forced in.
leveling is boring, gear is boring, loot is boring, exploration is boring, sidequests are (mostly) boring (at least better than FFXV I guess)

was weird to reach a new big semi-open area or town and just not give a shit because there's nothing interesting to find anyway.
every time I did go out of my way for a chest or item, 99% of the time it was worthless trash and I regretted even going there

To me the whole thing felt like it was supposed to be a spinoff like Stranger of Paradise as a pure action spectacle game like DMC,
but then halfway into development they pivoted to make it FF16 and shoehorned in all the super shallow RPG stuff so it's more presentable as a mainline FF.

Pretty much the same feeling for me. Sort of half way through the campaign and have to force myself to play. The combat can be fun, but then again you either fight filler monsters with zero challenge or long winded "epic" battles that are tiresome.

took me about 55 hours, ignoring maybe half the hunts and a couple sidequests.
Takes a lot of time just running around since you can't sprint in town or most quest locations, and NPCs talk a lot

I considered that part of the boring gear since that's all you "craft", but you're right.
really everything RPGish you do just felt so pointless to me

it does in the way that it leaves you no choices to make in terms of progression, which reminds me of 13 I think
in terms of gameplay, I mean, no, but you might wish it did Laughing

So yeah, not really getting sold on the story so far.

Oh also, why is our hero whispering all the time? It's a normal conversation Clyde, you can speak normally. We're among friends here at camp. No need to whisper really loudly whenever you speak. Or are you just trying to sound cool?

Anyway, I want to pick it back up and finish before I run into any major spoilers, but reddit already fucking showed me a thread title about the tone of the ending so that just made me go play Street Fighter some more. Ugh.

Yeah some of the stuff that happens makes no sense, or at least I never found out how it would.
It's possible i missed some stuff since it happened a few times that some major fact about the world was dropped in some generic dialogue with no fanfare, regarding stuff like the blight, or bearers, or the curse, etc. It's so weird, I don't really understand any of it even after finishing the game.
I also did not read all of the "codex" entries since at some point I gave up on it when I got conflicting information that confused me even more, so maybe there's some truths left in there.

The way that scene you mentioned is so disjointed, yeah I noticed that too, to me it felt like they split this whole sequence in two and moved part 1 here and made it a new thing when they moved from action game to pseudo-rpg, requiring additional scenes with additional characters. It all felt to me like it would have fit better in the area you go to next, where you finish that battle...

I finished it last week. The game is so fucking good, I couldn't believe what I am seeing on the screen. I played it in quality mode and motion blur is so good. Really helps with motion on oled.
HDR, graphics, amazing music. This game!

some amazing music:

nah KC is right, imo.
oled can feel stuttery in comparison to other displays at lower framerates (30, 24), and motion blur masks that.
I also played on 30 most of the time since performance mode was so unstable.

it's also made for HDR first and you see it, there's lots of scenes where it really stands out more than most games.
Graphics are definitely a highlight too, though inconsistent, there's some things that are really mindblowing in there.
and yeah music is outstanding, as expected from a FF.

True

The amazing pixel response time of OLEDs means that at high framerates motion blur becomes even more detrimental to image quality because if you turn motion blur off the image remains buttery smooth (as it does on high framerate displays)

but the image remains perfectly clear even during motion unlike on traditional displays (not counting 240hz+ displays)

But any sort of motion blur instantly kills that motion clarity

Conversely at lower framerates, I'd say below 80fps or so and increasingly worse with less framerate, the image appears even more stuttery because the instant pixel response time means any sort of motion or rather pixel changes seem more abrupt

Basically displays with higher pixel response times have built-in motion blur

And it's obviously not 0 with OLEDs either, but it's enough to make low FPS content seem extra stuttery (and high FPS content seem that extra bit more clear/sharp)

You get used to it I find but using SVP to interpolate lower framerate media really helps or using motion blur in gaming.

I have an OLED TV and 40-60fps from performance mode is still way better than 30fps to me.
Resolution is downgraded but it's not that important during gameplay.

Cutscenes are in 4K 30fps anyway and are running at the same FPS/resolution as in quality mode.

30fps looks like shit on Oled unless you have high quality motion blur.
Which this game has

Yeah, I put it down for 2 weeks, forced myself to play it again last Sunday, and I ended up dozing off as Vivian of the Exposition Dump dumped some more exposition. Great storytelling.

Also did some hunts, but what's the point? Rewards are shit. Like some give you crafting materials to build unique weapons, but others will give you some stones that you use for crafting that isn't rare or hard to find and that you find all over the map.

Also that funny little 'secret' chest thing in that desert area where you had to climb the back wall, go on a small route to an overlooking cliff to find a chest before you drop back down and head out. So like, wow, wonder what's in this chest? Oh, it's a meteorite. That I already have a ton of because it's for crafting but there's been nothing to craft for the past couple of hours, and they also sell the fucking thing in the store!

Oh and combat just continues to piss me off. Especially after seeing all these knobs talking about how "actually, combat is deep, look at my awesome combo against the training dummy that launches it in the air and goes for like 50+ hits", when in the actual game, you either kill the enemy in like 10 hits as it's a trash mob, or it's an elite enemy that you can't launch, you can't hit stun, and when you do stagger it, it's not getting launched either. So what the fuck is the point of your super cool combo when the only thing you can use it on is the training dummy?

Fuck all the producers and directors and writers of this game. It's shit.

They forgot how to make games after FF10

FF12 can be set up to play itself, FF13 almost plays itself, 14's a generic MMO and 15 is atrocious. Haven't played 16 yet, but the above sounds about right Laughing

Does 13 play itself? You need to buff and bring stagger up so you can do serious damage. Just using one damage type won't get you far

There are some great boss battles but the normal fights are frustratingly easy even on the Action mode so I dread to think what Story mode is like.
Apparently the Final Fantasy mode which unlocks after a first playthrough has a higher difficulty.

Grabbed the OST and I must say, it is quite the compilation. 8 discs worth. There are a lot of variants of the older title songs/fanfaires, but overall, some good stuff.
