Yea that's the only games I play single player:
Cities skylines, planet coaster, prison architect, factorio, kerbal space, MS flight sim, Space Engineers, RimWorld..etc.
Trust me there is plenty of games out there that are for the people like me
You can tell my tastes by my top played games in steam. And the ones like ark, scum, GTA 5 etc are all MP hours on closed server with friends:
Spoiler: | |
And even the games with stories I can enjoy the mechanics of: RDR2, FarCry, this game, Ark, Sons of Forest. NMS. Love them all for the mechanics. Didn't feel I lost anything personally by not following the story in them. I have over 1000 hours in Ark (mostly MP though). All I know of it is "I got a gem on my arm, I'm around dinosaurs...got it: Survive and raise/kill dinos." |
yeah i "could" understand it, but not really rotfl. game is a wide medium, combining art from x fields into one and good writing/dialogues/story/character is one of that art. it just look like you cant appriciate it in game form, i can both appreciate the zen state of getting flow in tetris, chill state in some city builder and so on, good shooting mechanics in mp fpp games, same i can appriciate story, good writing, little info that boosts overall feeling, world creation and so on - and diablo 4 has plenty of flavour text, little stories in small sub quests, bits of storytelling by environment here and there and so on, and i play every diablo game like that at first - for story/lore + mechanics, then its purely mechanics in endgame and other playthroughts. cuz 1st play is exactly that - first and you can only have one of first playthroughts.
its like with yt/streamers - some of them have that shitty feeling that they have beat 1st a game, almost entirely single player arpg - and for no reason, theres no competitive element whatsoever, no ranking, no nothing - yay u beat 100lvl 1st - who the fuck remembers who done it after 15 minutes of reading that info on some website lol
so basically imo youre missing a ton but oh well, whatever floats your boat really

Not missing it if I don't want it
Say you dont like anchovies on your pizza. No matter how good I think it is, me telling you that you are missing out, doesn't mean you haven't tried it before then didn't have a liking to it, or even want it now.
Nor does it mean you dont really enjoy food. You just dont enjoy or want your food that way.
It basically boils down to: If I am passively watching another character, I do movies or books.
If I AM the character, I want to control the narrative and anything he can do I can think of. So I go to tabletop RPG.
If I play a game, I play for the 'game' part.

That's what I do. I get games without 'anchovies' for me.
If friends want to play a game they like that has 'anchovies' with me, I take them off and enjoy eating the pizza and the rest of the toppings, and spending time with friends.
If someone buys me a large pizza (game) with anchovies because they want to have dinner with me, I won't throw it away. I will take them off and eat the rest
Just as I wont tell you you are missing out by spending 4 hours perfectly manually setting sidewalks and roads, and crosswalks inside a single subdivision in Cities Skylines. I hope no one tells me I am missing out, on something they enjoy that I dont
Just like I dont enjoy watching sports. I am not missing anything by not joining the people that shout and cheer, and rally around a team. As it does nothing for me. I go to one of those, I am bored to hell. I can't miss what I dont want to be doing. haha.

Yep. Always. Amazing that people defend it when it happens EVERY time.
It was easy to mitigate in D2R as it had an offline mode, it's fucked here

I mean, it's basically an MMO(ish)
So the only offline mode, just like in D2R, would be one where you would be all alone and could never play the character online
How many people would really want that? percentage wise of the whole player base? 1%? Less?
Having played this game like an absolute no-lifer and having reached 100 last weekend I can say an offline mode would not have made much a difference
The servers had their shitty moments but all in all it was one of the most stable multiplayer releases in the recent years (not counting games nobody plays)
Still not a great game btw., I'm definitely done

The quests are so cheaply designed. NPCs disappear just to spawn a few meters away. Doors open without reason and all kind of corners are cut so they don't have to script too many events.
Their design is also extremely generic and the writing isn't any better also. There's a handful of decent quests in the game, everything else is MMO filler.

An MMO? no-one. If it were a proper ARPG game, D2's offline + mod support + hamachi / lan play is much much better than Blizzard USA servers 350ms, queuing for 30 mins or being offline for no reason.

God damn when are game developers going to stop with this shit? Late Hawzear spoiler
Spoiler: | I've been running all across the damn continent hunting Elias. Killed him many times but due to his immortality it wouldn't stick. Finally, finally he's mortal and i can get him. NOPE! Cinematic cutscene awesomeness is gonna hand the kill over to the fucking witch instead. Absolutely loathe when games do this. Lost ark is the worst culprit, but Blizzard is trailing closely behind. Happens a lot in WoW also now. |

Why would it be 1%? Their games are constantly fucked at launch (and beyond), I would GLADLY play offline by myself.
Many places still have rubbish internet. If the choice is experiencing the game with high latency, rubberbanding etc etc VS no online related problems, I doubt most people with shitty connections are going for the first option.
Even now if I boot up D2R, it still feels like trash to play compared to offline. That's with barely any players compared to launch and because my ping is always going to be high. There is so much visibility on this issue on the Blizzard forums, reddit etc.

It's hack and slash arpg. Be happy there are even side quests. TBH the always online is just there so people have to buy it for 70 moneys (€/$) while it's a 40 moneys game at best.
But you know it's AAA gaming for us, just spread those cheeks.

It's a hack and slash that tries to masquerade as something else. They spent a lot on creating an illusion of substance, depth and complexity, instead of actually investing in making them a reality.

But I do, since I always felt that there could be more to / in the worlds of D2 and D3.
Personally, I can make peace with the fact that the game is in a form of EA. Lucky me, right!?
Spoiler: | No one guarantees that the game will improve / expand / evolve in time, though. |

like what things? its singleplayer grinding arpg as usual, or with friends if you want it to be, as usual. stuff will be added for years in patches, seasons and expansions, as usual.

So has anyone figured out what there is to do at endgame? Nope. Ok. Guess it's time to leave this be until season 1 or whenever they figure out something.
I don't understand how farming bosses in d2 is way more fun than whatever the fuck happens in this game after getting to t4. Nothing new. Once you're like 50+ and get access to t4 everything is the same until 100 and pointless i might add. What kind of idiots developed this game? Fuck. Even paid 90$ for early access. Can't believe i was actually stupid enough to think they wouldn't fuck this up. I just don't get it how... even d3 at launch while it didnt have GRs you still had something to chase. Here? Noooothing.
Fuck.
Now nothing to play again til end of the year. Can't even be bothered to login to get to 100 anymore, stopped at 72. No leaderboards? No point.
I mean seriously. Why bother getting to 100 and completing your paragon board and also farming perfect items if there's nothing to do with them? To compete in? Something new to do/see. Like doing mythics in wow from lvl 1 to max then ... nothing new at max lvl. Who would play that? No one that's who.
Shit devs.

I think it's too easy to say "blabla it's a new game give them time" In this day and age. They need to develop activities for endgame as it's an important part. There are loads of games to take inspiration from.

Including their own goddamn games. It's clear they're either idiots intentionally or they're holding back content. My guess is on the latter, cause the first i mean... there had to be a few people with brains in the company saying "but..."
Even the dungeons are shit, 100+ dungeons but only 10 visual "identities". So 10 dungeons in total but ... hey there's a path to the left in this one, the other has one to the right. Think they just started development once they announced immortal and got shit on, not 10 years ago.
Anyway, last money i'm ever spending on blizzard games, company's gone off the far end. Too bad my diablo fanboyism got in the way of me seeing this for what it really was.

hehe, you gained respect from me. It's hard to aknowledge that your go to company went to shit when you believed in them pulling off something miraculous. I was a die hard Blizz fan from D1 times, invested 1.5k hours in Diablo franchise from which 800h in D3, but i couldn't stomach this neoD3 (D4?) in any way. And they can't add anything meaningful later in S1 or S5 because there is no foundation for that. Some say it has good skeleton for building upon it, but they are wrong cause blizzard will never put meat on bones - they just don't care.

My only problem at the moment is I'm tired of it. The first ~20hrs or so were good, but it's starting to grate. Level 50, been spamming the same shit for hours upon hours now. Tried other stuff, but it just draws fights out for longer.
There's so little variation in... everything. The cheapness of MMO centric design is shining through when finding a new town, talking to anyone or visiting a store.
And you know what I really, really miss? The old cinematics. It's not the same now. Especially when you're watching your character do something with a bunch of things clipping into each other because of buggy physics. Those FMVs were apart of the soul of older games for me. Those ones from D2 when I was 14, god damn
At least with Diablo III, it was over before too long. I had more fun with D2R.

I mean the gameplay is quite alright while leveling. When you reach 50 you'll overpower the story for sure. I was blasting everything at some point at WL2. I even blasted the forts which scales above 50 even in WL2. My biggest problem is the damn loot. At some point i get tired of looking for upgrades and just stick with old shit way too long.
I see people talking about this being a mmo, but it's not really. There are no platforms to get to know other players. There's no incentive to group up at all unless you're in a guild. It's just a single player game with a persistent universe.
Now i'm a cynic though. I believe this forced online only is just solely for the store and nothing else. Not making any extra dollas from offline players now are they? Greedy sacks of shit seeing as the base game is expensive.
