It's still a drop in the ocean to what they became, there's no way you don't know what I mean
So have been the GTA games and most older open-world games compared to new ones, except for the Elder Scrolls. It was still big for the 2000's.

No i believe the first game blocked your progress as you had to kill targets to move on to another part of the town. For 3 towns...
It's gameplay was revolutionary at the time, but the game itself was still shit. I wonder how many times i quit that game due to boredom.
I really loved the 1st game. Yes, it did have limitations before you progress because there was that "losing synchronization" thing when you try to go outside an area that Altair has not been at that point. But once you fully unlocked a city you could freely go around it. And going on top of towers looking over a city was damn amazing back then. The combat and stealth felt lacking but were good enough.
Yeah I played AC1 for about 2-3 hours, thought it was boring as fuck, shift deleted and have had zero interest in it's 73x sequels. Someone buys them tho? *Shrug.
Pretty much experience with Ubisoft entire catalogue outside Anno and that one poorly performing Might and Magic release.
Prehurrdurred. AC Syndicate and AC Odyssey remain the only 2 AC games I couldn't finish (AC Syndicate because the combat and story sucked, and AC Odyssey because it was too big and my retarded brain has to do every single side stuff before I progress the story and I got bored with it).
Something on the smaller side with old-school AC sprinkled in is perfect.
odyssey too big? valhalla was even bigger same for me, but syndicate and valhalla
If it really was bigger then maybe the map was just constructed better, maybe because it was just one landmass (apart from the tutorial and late-game area which was separate), in Odyssey travel took too much time because everything was so far apart, with tons of islands with stuff to collect.

Backtotheroots Creed 2007 Edition where the player can climb up towers again, eavesdrop and collect glitter - but with modern Ubi-storytelling, UCAV Eagle and the cutting-edge Ghost of Mordor Mark 'n Execute. What's not to like
