I don't think they were attemtping to find a replacement for Goggins's Boyd Crowder. This is a different kind of villain than Boyd was (who was more between a villain and an antihero), this is just a very unstable person with a rotten soul and complete disregard for human life, and I think the actor is doing a pretty good job of conveying it. By watching his scenes you can imagine how one would be scared of being around a person like that.
No one can replace Boyd Crowder and trying to make an imitation of him as an antagonist would fall flat. This show needs a new different villain for it to work.
I remember way back when I watched Justified it was more because of Boyd than U.S Marshall Stiffpants

That we can agree, he's still my favorite antagonist ever on TV along with Al "Cocksucker" Swearengen (what a coincidence, both were antagonists to protagonists played by Timothy Olyphant )
i think i like this season so far more than the main show. apparently the story wasnt a justified story, but they took the story and made it a justified show.
