Well in this case they played technically played it safe and it was a complete failure. I looked a while back, it's the same directors and production leads as Prey.
It's a case of being massively out of touch with your customer.
Could we finally be hitting a point where gamers are tiring of same engine/look and feel, same gameplay as 15 other trending titles, also the constant bland story/lore because it may offend someone. I certainly am, the best games this year are remakes of 10-15 yr old ones, I wonder why that is?
Also 80k people watching other people play the game on twitch WTF?!
Having played 4 hours of it, I feel very mixed about Redfall.
The visuals are ok but nothing special and the design choice to use artistic slideshows instead of cinematic cutscenes to tell the story is very lazy for a AAA title. Mission structure and general gameplay is lacklustre but I do quite like the looting, shooting and exploration. I also like the environments but world interaction is lacking and the NPCs are disappointingly lifeless.
Where the hell is the stealth play that Arkane have done so well previously? Instead of a button prompt to trigger a takedown animation, the elbow melee attack from behind just adds to my overall disappointment. The god awful AI is a real shame because by the time it gets patched, if ever, I’ll have probably moved onto something else.
The single player just feels tacked onto a multiplayer hero looter shooter and is nowhere near the quality of an Arkane game if it had released as a fully story driven narrative solo experience. This game should have been single player only or co-op only and not both because it doesn’t work that way and if it was multiplayer only, I wouldn’t be playing it. The game is pretty mediocre overall and sometimes fun which proves there really is some fun to be had with mediocrity lol.
I wanted to like Redfall a lot more than I did and I probably do like it more than most but I doubt I would have bought this if it wasn’t on Gamepass and I’m tempted to wait for updates before playing it anymore.
I think a generous 6/10 is about right in its current state.
Just found something interesting, IMO.
Two fairly big utubers are openly taking a shit on it at release day:
First time I remember seeing anything like this on release date, but probably just following the algorithm on the heels of Jedi Survivor's disaster release.
Top job bethesda

In that first video, the vampire not being able to go around the car to attack the player
There's a better one shortly after with a forklift between player and vampire. After a while pushing directly into the forklift on the opposite side, the enemy actually loses track of you and enters search mode
And damn, the music also sucks ass

Remember this is not the old Arkane that made great games.
One of the reasons why Colantonio and other folks left after Prey was indeed the Bethmen's constant pressing interference, as well as the desire to focus on different and more modern genres that could cater to different people since their games sadly didn't meet the expectations(tm) in terms of sales. Harvey Smith is still there, but similarly to many veteran developers, he seems to be having a more passive role these days almost as if his creative drive has run out of steam and he's just there to collect the bag.
I imagine those who once were the assistants and interns have become the leads, much like it happened to BiowarEA. So not only have the sales not improved, but the quality of their games has declined to the point of reaching rock bottom
But yeah, gaming has changed and all good things must end. I'm just glad I could thoroughly enjoy Arkane's past games, from all the vintage ones to Dishonored 2 and Prey (aka the System Shock 3 that we never had) which I consider modern classics.
