Ah man i loved that game. Apparently it had a huge modding/level community.

Not sure if it was/is large, but it's definitely dedicated, like the Gothic one. Some mods were released in late 2022

The ambient music in Gothic 3 is fantastic.
Played a bit recently but... it aged quite poorly.
A 'shit' game I could not enjoy, this one...

YES! You nailed it perfectly - - play ME1/2/3 for the chars and story, but for me, ME:A had the fun and relaxed exploration that got me. I also had a blast just finishing Everspace2.
In the spirit of Andromeda, I'll add another to the list and it's probably just as toxic as ME:A...
Mafia 3
Yes, I said it. I fucking loved everything about it. (grew up in the Nola area, just not during this time frame). The soundtrack was killer. The story, voice acting, and characters were all good. The driving and environment was stellar.
And once I installed a mod to take out some of the grind, the gameplay was perfect (the mod is a MUST). Driving through the bayou in my 70s muscle car, listening to "Runaway", with the sun setting on my way to check on my weed farm... well, I'm just loving that a game made it possible for me to type that sentence.
Still, I'd remove the moniker of Mafia and have it stand alone as it's own IP. I'm a huge fan of Mafia. This one didn't need to be in that group. But it's great.

@blackeyedboy
I consider it mediocre by Fallout's standards in terms of RPG mechanics, branching and writing (even when taking into account Fallout 3, which was already streamlined in multiple ways, yet it did the aforementioned things slightly better) - enough for me to collocate it where it belongs.
The fact that most people accepted and even embraced decline just because the game featured better shooting and base building means very little to me. But like I said, it can be a decent survival-based and explorative experience after being fixed 'n modded properly, à la F4lloutlands Shadow of Commonbyl.

Overall, I'd say that carrying the Mafia name comes with certain expectations. And a lot of gamers just weren't expecting this deviation from what Mafia had delivered up to this point. The locale changing, the pace and gameplay elements changing, the era completely changing. It just didn't feel like it fit the Mafia world.
For the game specifically, there is a *major* grind associated with taking over territory. So much so that it pads the game by at least 15-30 hours depending on your play style. Seriously. It's awful awful awful. I did the first area without the mod and was ready to quit the game even though I loved it's overall feel and atmosphere. The grindy gameplay was killing the enjoyment. Quick mod install and voilà. Absolutely game-changing.

@ixigia
I agree with what you are saying.
But... I still wouldn't say about it that it's overall SHIT. Even if it DID disappoint in so many aspects...

People have been so conditioned by shit mainstream reviews that they don't even understand what a shit game is anymore ... any slightly flawed or quirky game, or buggy release and it qualifies apparently ....
Really ? Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Fallout 4, Divinity 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout New Vegas, Gotjhic 1-2-3, Skyrim, Alpha Protocol, Detroid Become Human, Diablo 3, Vampyr all of these? The only shit thing here is this whole thread.

I wonder, I'm guessing games that aren't actually shit but were critically panned by media or fans for whatever reasons.
Well the lowest scores on that list of games were above a 70 on metacritic(with the exception of Gothic 3's critic review and console versions of Cyberpunk which shouldn't really count in the pc thread), so I still don't see where the "shit" (there I added your precious quotes) fits.

Ah yes, metacritic, the bastion we should continue to measure quality by
https://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/dragon-age-ii
There's no need to be nasty about it, clearly the topic is for discussing games that are considered shit by any group of people for whatever reason
If someone called Gothic 3 shit, even though I love it, I would certainly understand why they did that

So it is basically post whatever game you like cause as long as your neighbor or dog thinks it is "shit" for whatever reason it qualifies?
Or is it just like, I'm playing this 20 or 10 year old game and think it is shit now and that qualifies?
The first game on here by the thread maker works, it isn't a popular game, it is a movie tie-in that isn't exactly well rated or anything, and most people would expect to be bad.
But no, let us put GotY contenders and other good games on the list...
Well then I'll put my entry here as Elden Ring, a "shit" game that I liked.

Gothic 3 was a unfinished shit game no matter how you cut or slice it

I guess my taste is too good, or I just don't have the patience anymore |
Nope. Its not that it has a dedicated fanbase. It was a genuinly great game. There were reviews back in 07 saying a game this good only comes out once or twice a decade, so best savour it and not rush it. The more modern retcon where the game is supposed to be bad that you see online these days are either playstation only/mostly gamers or people who got so accustomed with modern game systems and controls, that any game that deviates the slightest from that doesnt feel good, which i suspect might be what you're feeling.
Have to say though, the premise of this thread made me think of games more along the lines of something like Alone in the Dark 2008, Messiah, Chaser, Boiling Point, Ubersoldier, Matrix Path of Neo, E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy These types of games. Universally and objectivelly poor, but with the possibility of someone finding various aspects they enjoy despite that. Gothic, the reveered games that were so loved in certain parts of europe to the points of having cult like fans was not exactly what i had in mind

@qqq your second paragraph list is exactly what i thought of too, a good list. Except i never played them.
So if its popular = instantly makes it not a shit game? Yeah i dunno about that.

a "shit game" can by anything you don't like, maybe i don't like Minecraft or Fortnite, but that's not what "shit game" should mean in this context, then the thread should be named "games you think are shit" or similar.

Dragon Age 2 is like that for me. The gameplay is abysmal but I really enjoyed the story (more than any other DA game) and even replay it from time to time on easy to avoid dealing with the combat.
