I use my LG C2 42" OLED in 21:9 mode with black bars, its around 38" size and 3840x1600.

glossy is easier to clean, makes contrast pop and most importantly - shows sharp, dimmed reflections compared to big reflected blobs which I hate.
And You shouldn't watch oled or any other tv during the day or against the window anyway. It's no way to consume critical content. Oled or not.

I had glossy ips too andit looked way better than normal ips.

Need a new monitor for work

The last monitor I bought was a LG 27GL83A, recommended by Leo. I still use today and I love it

So I was thinking this:

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lg-27gp850-b-27-165hz-qhd-ultragear-gaming-monitor

Anything better for a similar price? It needs: 1440p / fast refresh / IPS. It'll also be used for gaming at times.

Looks good outside whether you want to wait for 27"OLED, they will probably rip us sideways for those though.

It arrived today, it's great

I'm guessing the 'HDR' is still the dodgy type, but I never use it anyway

HDR on PC is now what 4K was 10-15 years ago. Smile

Both the Nvidia overlay and Microsofts game thingy capture video and screenshots in HDR if your content is running in HDR

And thanks to AutoHDR and/or Special K almost everything supports HDR

I've had nothing but a blast with it. I run every game with HDR. The only times I run into problems with it is if a game runs EAC. For some reason EAC really loves blocking AutoHDR not to mention Special K.

Hell, a month ago I played some Battlefield 2 for some nostalgia and thanks to dgvoodoo2 upgrading it to DX12 it also supported AutoHDR.

Nvidia even implemented a driver toggle that automatically puts Vulkan and OpenGL into the DXGI swapchain and gives those games support for AutoHDR. Not that that was the intention, just a nice side effect. So you can run emulators with AutoHDR too now.

RetroArch even has native HDR support included now and there are some sick OLED optimized CRT HDR shaders out there.

You're probably gonna have a much less good time with all this if you're not on Windows 11 tho

So honestly, the best HDR experience IS on PC now.
Thanks to all these little tricks and hacks you can have a virtually permantent HDR gaming experience no matter how old or unsupported the game (with exceptions).

Footnote: Some games, like Hitman 3, have a pretty poor and washed out HDR implementation and AutoHDR outperforms them.

Support is perfect. No issues at all. Better than console HDR as well.

On windows11. No idea about the rest.

My sight on the same ASUS monitor is the same, but i am worried about the "fading pixels" on texts (like ghosting but without the picture moving. Think of a notepad file opened with words, or even Word) even though i am like *Grabs a meter* ~57cm away from the screen

And then the possible OLED burn-in (Unless you can get the same brightness or similar while greatly reducing the risk of burn-in)

Uses: Art (Adobe Photoshop / illustrator), gaming, browsing...

Although it's very hard to find the monitor touching the 1100 price tag instead of the brutal 1300-1400 some european pages are shown (And NO, Amazon SPAIN does NOT have it)

I've had OLED (tv) since 2018 and haven't had a burn in issue. Watch hours of NBA basketball a day during playoffs. I do keep the brightness at 30-40% unless im watching movies or HDR. Other than that that's about it.. no babysitting. No burn in but i also refuse to put up solid color screens and go looking for problems.

For PC use, i'd auto hide taskbar and rotate wallpapers.

Running a 42 OLED as my monitor since December. 8h of office work. No burn in. Like W123 mentioned, some basic precautions: hidden taskbar, rotating wallpaper, dark mode installed in chrome and brightness kept low for work/browsing

Getting a 19" Samsung Syncmaster 957MB CRT from a friend.
His mother used it for her computer so i don't think its used that much

gonna test it with MAME and some nice shmups. i actually do hope i get very underwhelmed so i don't have to use it because they're not very... convenient.

what could be the issue of only getting 60Hz recognized on my new 170hz monitor (MSI 24" Optix G2412 IPS)?

Is the graphics card too old, a XFX HD6870 2GB?

i noticed for my main computer and its Rog Swift gaming monitor i use displayport, and likely there was a reason for it, like not getting the Hz i wanted (if i remember correctly). Is it the same issue here maybe, though that old card doesn't have displayport...

its only gonna run mame basically so i'm not sure i want to upgrade to something better just to get displayport, i do want better hz though :/

but the card should have mini DP or not?
i don't know what kind of HDMI version the card has, if its hdmi 1.2 you will only get 60hz, if it's 1.3-1.4b you will get 144hz at 1080p.
if it's 1.3 or higher and it still only displays 60hz, try a newer HDMI cable.

aha, so that's what those tiny squares are, i wondered what they were. I'll get a mini displayport to display port then, thanks!

and yeah it's old HDMI, so its stuck to 60hz over hdmi it seems like.

After doing research, the Asus PG27AQDM sounds like it has some fucky firmware which results in desaturated colors in HDR. Ended up buying the LG for 899. It's a damned nice monitor. Can't say the difference between 144hz to 240hz was anything close to going from 60 hz to 144hz but it's still a good upgrade. And obviously the contrast ratio and HDR (though it tops out at only 600 nits... which is eye searing in a dark room IMO) is a huge upgrade over my 144hz IPS.

was it the LG UltraGear OLED 27GR95QE ?

1300 euro here in Sweden, too expensive imo... i'm looking for something better than my old ROG swift, i only really have it because it has 3D Vision, but its not a good screen.

For 1300 it needs to be 40"+...

Yes. I definitely get it if you think it's too pricey for the size. But personally 40" on my desk would be a joke, and too hard on the eyes. Plus i have large bookshelf speakers and don't really have room for that.

32" is my max for a monitor, and at 1440p they look rather grainy.. and i don't want to go 4k and rape my gpu.

27" is a good size, i went down from 32 ultrawide to 27" (non ultra wide) and i'm happier. i just mean its a bit expensive for the size, not that the size is bad. also i will keep my other 27" so 2x 27" makes the most sense to have on my desk (the old rogswift will be sitting over it).

Finally made some tests between my ASUS ROG Swift PG278QR (TN) and the Syncmaster 957MB (CRT).

Unsurprisingly the CRT has way better black and colors, that's the one thing you notice directly with the 2 screens showing the same game. TN displays certainly aren't great for that.

When playing, at first i said to myself there's no difference, but then i really started looking, and i looked at the character (using the game Cuphead to test) the character while in motion is a lot clearer on the CRT, its just as well-defined in motion as when its completely still. On the TN display the character is blurry in motion.

So sure, if you want the game to look its best in motion i think CRT still takes the lead. For still images a modern display will always look better. I will still mostly use my modern screens because 4:3 isn't that great for modern games... for 90's PC games, retro shooters (old and new) + emulators i'll use the CRT.
