Kinda but not really. They just put all of the existing specialists into one of four "classes". The only thing the class determines is what your gadget loadout will be restricted to - for example, only engineers will be able to equip AT launchers/mines. You'll still be able to use whatever main/secondary weapons you want with whatever "class" you want. Half-assed approach, really, but better than nothing I suppose.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

The Return to the Class System also introduces Weapon Proficiencies. A set of optional and passive benefits that encourages using the Weapon Archetype for your Class during gameplay.
• Assault + Assault Rifles: 3 Extra Magazines
• Engineer + LMG: Improved Dispersion while Crouched or Prone
• Recon + Sniper Rifles: Immediate, constant and steady scope
• Support + SMG: Faster Draw Time
Weapon Proficiencies will help you understand what setup may work best for each particular Class, while also adding back Class Identity to the Battlefield.
Yeah, I like that you won't be forced to use a specific weapon family but there still will be incentive to use the one with the added proficiency for your chosen class. Especially noticeable for the recon class + sniper rifles.
I'm gonna miss my medic operator running around with the antitank gadget, though

The recon one is going to bite them in the ass. Snipers were already annoying enough - now with unlimited hold breath they're going to end up being a plague, lol.

On some degree I do understand current DICE's position whoever happen to work there nowadays. Developing a game of this scale during COVID-19 years is indeed very hard if not impossible project. Just imagine doing everything remotelly including different builds' downloads, having all supported platforms around your desk etc etc. If I can remember some devs ever revealed they literally did their work in the kitchen at their homes. Everyone who has children knows what I'm talking about.
Don't get me wrong. This game flopped and it flopped badly. Current situation is probably a damage control on some degree because not even them believe that many of gamers would consider pre-ordering next Battlefield game.
I'm glad they are trying to save this mess, though I believe that this game lost so much of it's potential due to BR nonsense and things which should've just kept away from a standard Battlefield game.
Hopefully they will learn something from this, in hope that the next game wont be as bad as this one. I'm not holding my breath on that, but we can only hope for the best.

Most people don't need game builds or even serious hardware because most people making the game are asset artists. I think the only thing COVID escalated is terrible management which was already bad in-person.
According to one of many stories being unable to download the latest build before doing your own tests was nearly impossible due to that people had to download different builds throughout the day. Sure not every dev needed this but the ones which relied on the latest builds really had to. We can only imagine who fustraiting it can get when you have to re-download 'same' data over and over again. Especially with a crappy connection.

It's 2023, not 1999, we have good internet nowadays.
Even in Sweden, many users are relying on 4G connection with whatever consumer grade 4G modem they happen to have.
"Many"? You sure about that? (I have no idea)
Based on the story I red about BF2042 development slow internet connection was definitely one of the annoyances while working at home. Even if it is an optical fiber, the bandwidth can be very limited, it wont help you much.

Try the game guise, it's really good right now. I dodged the bullet for over a year but now I think it was well worth the 10 bucks I paid for it last month.
Hmmm, that's weird. Not a single time since I bought the game and started playing back during the winter sale have I experienced any CPU usage spikes while playing, those are normally very noticeable, especially in this kind of games
