Soul—10/10

Very few films manage to move me these days as much as these Pixar films. I mean, it was very predictable and clear how events would unfold, and still here I am, teared up. ❤️

Swiss Family Robinson (1960) 6.5/10

I watched it dozens of times when I was around 7-8, so felt nostalgic and wondered how watchable it still is. And I also remember quite liking Roberta (Janet Munro) Wink

It's reasonably watchable, still quite an entertaining kids movie, really. Roberta was still cute Very Happy

But there's so much obvious animal abuse going on, it was very hard to watch at times.
The 2 dogs fighting the tiger got pretty bad, you could tell. The trapped zebra apparently also got electroshocks to make it move.
There are so many different animals in the movie, it's pretty ridiculous, like they got stranded in a zoo or something Laughing

Has some crazy history too. The scene with the giant anaconda took several weeks to film, and the 2 stuntmen often got unconscious during the fight.

Aftersun - 7/10

A very peculiar movie, dancing between indie pretentiousness and bittersweet storytelling. It feels genuine with its believable acting (both the protagonist and the little girl are solid), and while the personal extra-long shots can get awkward, it's all part of the package. I didn't really think much of it at first, but I found its subtlety fitting and the way the final scenes are handled is quite remarkable.

Infinity Pool - 'tis a roguelike/10

The flick entirely revolves around presenting utter hogwash, but it's a visually appealing and well-acted type of mysterious brute nonsense that keeps you engaged. At least until you realize that the journey inevitably amounts to nothing.

12 Years a Slave - 8,5/10

I finally got around to watching this, and it definitely lived up to the high expectations. Powerful and masterfully acted from start to finish (Ejiofor and my man Fassbender are especially great), and although there are some technical hiccups here and there, it's a genuine window on that tragic piece of history with quite a few scenes that remain engraved in the mind. Paul Dano's song is one of those Crying or Very sad Laughing

The Thirteenth Floor: 8/10, underrated movie that came out just before the Matrix. I reckon this is better than dark city as well. Worth a watch if you've not seen it.

Star-studded cast inside one very poignant story about the US Civil rights. Forest Whitaker, my man!

Ant-man & The Wasp: Quantumania (2023) 6/10

I like Ant-man, but this felt like it had a focus that was more on Cassie and she was just annoying little brat. Laughing
And I still hate the fact that when someone is thrusted in to a new world that has never been seens before, the characters act like "huh wow that's cool..what's next?"
Overall it was a good movie, but it lacked the "umph" and the villain needed more time to be fleshed out.

infinity pool 10/10 unusual thriller with a twist, brilliant acting from mia goth, best ive seen in a while, bonus points for watching high late at night lol. great mood, shots, music, actually original script for a change.

the menu 6.5/10 - to vanilla, looses tension in second half, but a decent watch, specially if u like taylor joy

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania 6.5/10

Kang, portrayed by Jonathan Majors is basically the sole reason I watched the film, he is basically holding on otherwise bad movie altogether.

Edit: Michael Douglas was also great in this film.

6.5 is still pretty high for an otherwise bad movie imo. But personal scales differ I guess.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Brendan The H̶u̶t̶t̶ Whale - 7,5/10
Also known as the life of your average middle-aged man from USA Cool Face

It's predictable, disgustingly Aronofskyian (in a good way) and set entirely inside a single room almost like a play drama, a peculiar formula that only works if the leading actor(s) can sustain it. And boy, does Fraser deliver the goods. I liked that every character has a redeemable side, despite all the mistakes and the sad general context.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

I knew this would be a tricky one, but I still decided to check it out for the sake of completeness, being a highly acclaimed Hollywinrar and all. The movie is technically competent with its stylish transitions tying up the multiverses, the acting works fairly well for the genre and..that's pretty much where my positives end. It honestly felt like watching an anime in film form in which every single element is engineered to get a fat resounding Alpha Gong Gong nope/10 reaction from me, everywhere, all at once.

The sad part is that it's still a much better film than the hyped multiverse film aka Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness Laughing

Haha yeah, I very much disliked it but at the same time I recognize that the movie is unique and does have qualities so in the end it's not bad, it just falls into the definitely not for me category Razz
