The updated demo thankfully has a FOV slider along with the option to turn off motion blur (and some other stuff like an improved map/menu, new features etc.)

In fact, it runs at a very steady 120fps on 4k DLSS Quality maxed out and feels great to play compared to the Dead Space stutterfest. |
Indeed, it runs smoothly even on my prehistoric PC while looking the part (except for the occasional blinding bloom). Granted, there's not much going on inside the levels and the AI entities are rudimentary, but still. My only complaint is that the melee combat doesn't quite feel as impactful as it should, I hope they can improve that part before the game releases in 2033.

I feel like I'm getting much better results if holding the hit button and then releasing when close to the target while it's apparently very important to have the enemy in crosshairs when released. E.g. if I target the mutant's head when releasing, its head gets torn off resulting in instant kill, naturally.
In general, quite a nice remake. They've done some minor changes to the map to make it more logical, but the looks and the atmosphere are all true to the original and it's a remake I always wanted as the original game's concept and the story certainly deserved it.

Bah, reads like a preview but it turns out to be just the latest demo review and the journo is too dense (shocking, I know) or unwilling to research the lore of the game's evolving release date
Quote: | Availability: Demo still available on Steam. Full release listed as March 2023, but is oddly unspecific this close to it. I'll check it out |

Been watching a bit the updated demo:
Spoiler: | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt1ZRX5FXpA |
This is the first game in my life where such cramped environments are a 'no' for me. I just don't find them ok, and they only make sense in the limited technical context of the original game from 100 years ago...
Never had trouble with Penumbra, Amnesia, Layers of Fear, Soma, Alien Isolation etc. games. But this... I just don't... Eh.
Probably huge fans of SS will be right at home here, though, thanks to nostalgia.

Not sure large spaces would make a lot of sense considering the setting itself. But sure, it might be a little bit more cramped than let's say dead space.

It's also the repetitiveness of the same size building/area base components.
It's like... Minecraft! Just look and you will see the same grid/cells everywhere! There's NO variation in level geometry!
A bottle of wine will give me much less headache than walking through those perfectly mathematically crafted levels.

To be fair, the fans pretty much wanted a 1:1 remake with better graphics and some QOL stuff. It's not quite that, but close enough. Going ham on the level design would probably just piss off their core audience. Again.

yup, i didn't back it (some 7-8 years ago) for a "spiritual remake", i want it to be like the original but better ui, controls, graphics, audio.. i also would have liked it better 7+ years ago than now i fear, i find it very, very hard to get into such games these days.

Shockingly (not), it ain't ready yet:
Quote: | The wait is (almost) over. The PC edition of System Shock – the fully fledged remake of the groundbreaking original from 1994 – will be released on 30 May this year.
We had hoped to bring the game to market by the end of March, but that turned out to be just beyond our reach; we are after all merely human (unlike Shodan!) |

A ton of bugs + stuff people didn't like at all was likely reported now when it's available to backers. still, i don't understand how a developer again and again can be so deluded.

Even without considering their previous track record, this delay was easy to predict by the absolute avalanche of bug reports the backer beta is generating. Many of them game-breaking bugs.

Not sure what pushed the release back exactly. I've reached the Engineering level and didn't encounter any bugs worth mentioning. The only kind of annoying thing is that when you re-enter a room or an area, the already dead enemies get respawned and drop down on the floor (like the game removes them from the level to optimize performance and redrops them where they were).
The game is pretty much what I wanted it to be. Lacks a few more finishes here and there (like, I only had to jettison the Beta grove, not the other two).

ATARI just bought them. People seem worried. I guess ATARI these days isn't what it used to mean, at some point a long time ago, in a retro universe, far far away...
