Well the original movie was the first slasher movie of its kind. Also John carpenters directing + his synth score (an early synth pioneer and a very iconic theme). It's a decent movie, but yeah the rest of the franchise is pretty average.
It's a slasher movie series. With clever writing you could add some social commentary (which rarely happens). That's about it, what more can it be? Why can't we just fund someone's original idea for a slasher though? because people that actually spend money on this stuff only want to watch something with a name they recognise.

god i hate movies where they repeat names. i remember seeing poltergeist 3, they repeat "carol anne" like every 10th second throughout the entire movie it felt like, at the end of the movie the actors are so tired of saying or screaming Carol Anne that they're like "krrlan"
