Ever since Criterion was put behind the "drivers seat" of the NFS franchise I just can't play for more than 5 minutes before uninstalling (it's been a couple of NFS releases since I tried though).
its been 10 years since last time Criterion was in the "drivers seat"
#yeet, A$APfamilia and full-fledged Japcraze all in the same package, truly a dream come true for modern NFS fans
Aside from the aspects that have been part of the franchise's subculture for years (and which I'm definitely not a fan of), the ultimate deal-breaker for me when it comes to racing games is the complete lack of physics. I need to have at least a pseudo-believable inertia/suspension system and some form of damage that can negate the lousy awesome button effect™
While the Forza Horizon series is the better alternative since it offers an immersive cockpit view and some great vistas, its driving model is also still unnecessarily dumbed down no matter the settings used, sadly - not as utterly dreadful as your typical NFS game mind you, but not too far off either. The formula designed to satisfy the instant reward dogma doesn't help, as it's very much the antithesis of what the series should be about.
I'd love to have an open-world driving game that isn't special..but alas. I've said this before but ironically, the best option is still GTA V ghetto edition with the Realistic Driving mod and ARS script for setting up offline races.
They actually went back and changed the library cover art on Heat and Hot Pursuit Remastered making it black and white with color on the car and the color of the font text to the same green as Unbound. Maybe they are hoping this is their form of subliminal advertising, like seeing your game art look like the new game will influence you to buy the new game.
Porsche Unleashed and Hot Pursuit 2 were the last ones I really enjoyed. Which I just realized are 20+ years old now. Dammit I'm old.

Even if you can turn off the anime car effects, all the characters still look anime and that probably will never change since I really do not see them doing 2 sets of every character model in the game.
