Played and watched independently, all the gameplay mechanics / features are okay.
But as a whole, it all feels like a ratatouille without salt. Something is missing at a fundamental level to bring all this together in a cohesive, fully, motivating, compelling experience.
what mechanic would it be? there's a story (even if its not exactly super great or interesting) and there's stuff to do if you just want to explore/mess around/build/trade/do missions etc.
if it can't be explained then it's probably not something they could add and it's probably just not your type of game?
Not sure where you see i claim you don't speak from your point of view? of course you do. and again, i don't think it's perfect either so i'm not sure what you're so upset about, i'm just curious which mechanic etc they could add to fix "Something is missing at a fundamental level to bring all this together in a cohesive, fully, motivating, compelling experience." if that's just a feeling more than something that you can point to then it's probably not your type of game, it's not something that can be "fixed". that's all i'm saying, not claiming you don't speak from your point of view.
i think the ones who might enjoy it the most are those people who likes games like Vallheim and Minecraft where you build and gather stuff + people who just wants the make-your-own-adventure type of gameplay.
Those are my type of games, to a tee. Minecraft by far has to be my most hours in a game, in the 10,000s of hours (ran a medium sized multiplayer server for 5+ years), followed by ARK, then Factorio, Space Engineers.
Minecraft, Space Engineers, Valheim, Factorio, Rimworld, Satisfactory, Cities Skylines, etc I will eat up.
But this one, I dunno. I cant get into it. Whatever the others in that genre like I mentioned has, this doesn't. Well it has it, but its so spread thin/diluted that the flavor of it isnt enough for me. Its hard to explain I cant put my finger on it. Everything is...too far between? I cannot think of the right phrase. The mechanics are there, but the pace is off, or wrong.. or something.
Its like elite dangerous to me: I enjoy the mechanics of the game and doing them. Just for some reason dislike GOING to do them.
Its like playing in a sandbox, but tools are spread too far around the massive sandbox to enjoy using them to make a castle. You spend far too much time wandering to the other side of the box staring at bland same-same sand to get a tool, than using it. I like the gameplay, but the pace and spacing/rhythm of how fast or slow it happens has too big a irregularity that I cannot control?....
That's not quite right way to say it either...It feels, JUUUST off being engaging enough to keep me motivated to get to the next step/stage/goal I made for myself.
Other games there is always something to 'do'. This one feel there is always something to GO do. And going there so you can do it is not 'fun' and takes longer than the thing you went for that is fun to do? (Still not right..trying to explain a vibe in words, its never quite right).

Fair enough. i probably should get into minecraft, i'd probably enjoy it.. i've spent some hours in it (ages ago) and it was pretty fun.
"Something is missing at a fundamental level to bring all this together in a cohesive, fully, motivating, compelling experience." if that's just a feeling more than something that you can point to...
It's actually more than a feeling, as there are valid points / arguments behind this.
But, as a distinguished gentleman, I consider them highly subjective* so that's why I didn't bring them into a discussion where we try to pinpoint (as objective as possible) pros and cons to someone that wants to try the game and MIGHT - who knows - possibly even enjoy it, after all...
But in the new light of the discussion, brought by Mr. DXWarlock, I can add that I find some of his motives for not getting into the game as very, VERY familiar.
*example: the art style / the flora, fauna / the mismatch between goofiness and seriousness etc.
Agree with blackeyedboy on this one. I came at it first with all the updates and the game still felt it was missing variety, some monotony stirrup using special sets; it felt as generative as described.
Solid mechanics, the whole minecraft aspect was slightly lacking but I'm a sucker for any good scify so i stuck to the end, haven't reached the galactic center yet is what's left and I doub't I will.
Every year, I vote for these guys during the Steam Awards for that one category that mentions Devs continuing to update their game. Another one would be Star Traders: Frontiers. Those guys have been releasing updates and new features every few weeks it seems like
The leap from version 3.0 to 4.0 is perhaps our biggest generational jump so far. It’s an exciting moment, and marks a solid foundation for future updates.
Depends, I enjoy it with friends.
If games where you make your own goals and it gives you none dont appeal to you its not a good game to play. it is VERY: Here is a sandbox, decide what your goal is.
It DOES have a story and linear(ish) plot. But no idea what that is, we stopped doing it the first chance we had where it was optional after that point.
We play with the plan to venture to every galaxy, setup outputs in resource rich areas to refuel and gather what we need to do so (or until we tied of the game). All the while seeking out the rare modules and ship parts that will allow us to do so more easily each trip to the center of each galaxy.
We have also set about setting up entire regions of galaxies named after each of our own hometowns with planets named after suburbs of our towns, with neighboring systems named after towns around us.
So is the gameplay pointless? Sure..but any game is ultimately with the only real point of any game is to have fun in it. none of it 'matters' really. And we are having fun.
Its sort of like the same reason to play space engineers. It has no point, other than ones you make for yourself.

I think it's one of the main "problems", people just don't know how to play a game like this, or perhaps rather, it's just not their genre at all (yet they believe it is and approach it like it is, for whatever reason). It's by no means perfect, but no game is.

The Terraria devs has been incredible too. They just released the "last" update. That game is like 11 years old.

Yea, I didnt mean it if it sounded like "If you dont like it, you are playing games wrong" vibe.
More if games with a game generated or story based progression direction is more your style of enjoyment and enjoy having a direction the game leads you towards as a end purpose of playing, this might be hard to get into.
Only parallels I can make that is maybe relatable even if not accurate other than surface level is EvE. EvE is infinitely more complex than this game. But same premise: Here is your starter ship, the rest is up to you on what you want to do in the game.
Which is my type of game, I dislike story based games, or ones that have a 'Goal out of the box' gameplay. I like games that is sandbox and reason to play is over only when I cannot think of anything else I myself want to do in it. Ones that have no 'end' beyond my lack of motivation to think of things Id enjoy.

For the ones who play it a lot, be careful, the new update changes inventory, but what they did not mention but I saw on reddit that it uninstalled all of the tech mods too, people who spent hours on finding/crafting them are pissed
