I did find that odd. The game deals with rape, murder, loads of profanity (cunt, fuck etc). Yet the dregs of society mustn't be heard muttering the word 'fag'. As if the writing of these characters somehow reflects upon the writers / developers themselves.
Exactly, really crazy and jarring.
I had to deal with something similar before but with voice actors. One person found the lines 'too offensive' (pretty mild in my opinion). Some people seem to find it impossible to separate real life from art. From the voice actor I was eventually able to use, verbatim:
that's why it's called voice acting...it's part of the character
Imagine trying to write for the Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood etc and not have any racial or homophobic slurs in them. Many storylines and interactions would be less genuine and impactful.
But I think it says more about the audience than the developers. They put the words in there after all, I guess they envisioned how the perpetually offended might react.
Yeah, I found that reddit comment too (I think it was reddit), but it wasn't clear where this thought was or if it still exists in the new version. Some people mention a toggle, some mention the thought, and I couldn't find a video of it anywhere when I checked. It's hard to understand how it works as a thought with no context.
It's no big deal, just odd given how little else is censored (including racist remarks).
I read some more about it and it isn't clear at all indeed, seems like people struggle to reproduce what was said in that Reddit comment (it sounded good though ! ) - I saw another comment on RPGCodex that you have to be both
Spoiler:
gay with that balcony talk, unlocking the thought
and be a super fascist too.. meh
Seems like there are two possible explanations for it :
- It was going to be an issue with streaming platforms, 100% with Twitch, they activated it for preview copies and just stuck with it - either for making fun of censorship to begin with, or just because of the hassle. However, dyke and other fag-derived terms are not censored, which is odd ;
- It's a deliberate artistic choice (although it's pretty annoying and immersion breaking to me too) which resonates with Henry's inner conflict about the subject on purpose.
The devs didn't ever communicate about it, which is definitely the more interesting and smarter router to leave interpretations very open while remaining completely neutral about it.

I went to the balcony after 9pm and no one in a purple shirt smoking was there. I have also read those early versions had the words uncensored, then there was an option to uncensor.
It's so strange considering the crazy off the wall shit that is in the game. I'm surprised it even exists at all in this day and age.
It appears multiple key leads behind Disco Elysium (including Robert Kurvitz, Aleksander Rostov and Helen Hindpere) have been pushed out of ZA/UM (the company) and are not involved with the sequel anymore
what a fucking waste, the world of disco elysium was amazing and could have been explored some more, but without the guys who made the first game great, i doubt anything they come up with will be the 'real' thing story/world building wise
Haha damn, yeah that really sucks. At the end of the day, we should consider ourselves lucky that we got to experience such genuine Disco greatness in the first place, as another decline is upon us. *ESPRIT DE CORPS[Formidable: Failure] intensifies*
