It almost always looks obvious, but it can still be done very poetically and fitting with the story, so that it doesn't stand out.

I love that movie. What a great time that was, and shortly after there was Hero. Were there any memorable chinese action movies from that era after these two? Maybe Fearless? But anything else?

House of Flying Daggers, from 2004, is all sorts of awesome!

Musa (The Warrior) is also very epic, from 2001. It's Korean though. Together with Hero, those are the best I can think of, from that time

Probably no coincidence they all feature Ziyi Zhang Laughing

Yes, I think I'm going to rewatch all of them, having seen those clips again Very Happy
From the early 2000s, there's of course still Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer Very Happy not quite "poetic" as the ones mentioned above Wink , but awesome(ly hilarious). And it has great "wire-fu" too.

Zatoichi (2003) is very good too, a bit more a traditional samurai movie.

Ong-Bak (2003) and The Protector (2005) are also from that era, although not Chinese.

But I assume you've seen those too Very Happy

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is very unique in its visuals and poetry, because it was made by Ang Lee who isnt an action movie director but only made dramas before it (of whom plenty won awards too).
He made a movie about characters and their motivations first and foremost, then added the action scenes afterwards while giving them a beijing opera style.
I can't think of any movies comparable to it, except for Hero maybe to some extent.
House of flying daggers wanted to emulate CTHD in a very obvious tryhard way and I didnt really like it.
I liked Red Cliff alot, it had some over the top action scenes too and was an epic and very long movie (hence split it into 2 movies actually), but it had good acting and characters since it was based on the romance of the three kingdoms novel.
