While i get that you can fill in some gaps by headcanoning this, the whole movie would be nothing but a waste of time had it all been a dream.

Movies a 6-7/10 for me. Any scenes with the planes are 10/10 incredible, it was the character development (which they did put some effort into) just comes off cringe.
The storyline also steers into the fantasy realm quite a few times. Are real fighter jets performing aerial stunts and good cinematography not enough?! i think so, but evidently not.

I enjoyed it too, a classic solid Cruisebuster that does exactly what it was designed to do. It felt like watching some sort of Ace Combat 'Murica Edition 
The story is just there to dispense cheap emotional berries and justify the action, but there aren't too many flying pears involved and it does have the charm typical of the ol' 90s movies. It's actually less cheesy than the first one which is a plus for me, and the directing really shines when things get heated up in the sky. May the galactic confederacy preserve us Tom, the ageless minister of quality pew-pew.

Strong start, sags big time in the middle, the whole Connelly storyline feels completely unnecessary (what a useless "love scene" - even the original's heavily artsy one had more merit), and more or less redeems itself towards the end (as ludicrous as it was) It was also a bit too thick on the fan service.
7.5/10 on a good day. Original still reigns supreme.
One of the biggest things to piss me off however was having Lady Gaga's name listed in the opening credits between the incomparable cinematic score greats that are Harold Faltermeyer and Hans Zimmer, all because she belted out a piece in the final one minute of the movie (that didn't fit the tone at all). What a fucking joke.
