Since no proper Top Gun release yet, it was time to watch some crappy movies again.

The Comeback Trail (2020) 5/10

A very average movie about film producers and a has been actor trying to make a movie.
Tommy Lee Jones somehow looks much older than Robert De Niro even though he is younger....must be booze or drugs.

Buddy Games (2019) 4/10

It was on Netflix and I decided to give it a try. Not really that funny even though it tried with a lot of dick jokes.
Olivia Munn was hot. Smile

Prey - 7.5/10 (almost 8 tbh)

Great movie for what it's worth, didn't feel cheap nor over-exposed. FX and ending felt a tiiiny bit meh, but the rest made it pack a punch. Recommended!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 8,5/10

Although the element of surprise was not present since I remembered the plot, the movie was just as engaging and captivating as the first time. Excellent acting, clever concept, rock-solid directing, it's a timeless ride on the feel train that actually gets better as one gets older.

Il Capitale Umano / Human Capital (2013) - 7/10

Three different stories that end up intertwining in curious and quite surprising ways. Virzì is usually a master at mixing drama with comedy, the former aspect however is definitely more preeminent here. One of the few decent Italian movies released in the last decade, along with La migliore Offerta, Suburra, Perfetti Sconosciuti, La Pazza Gioia, Dogman and The Hand of God.

Prey - 5.5/10

They succeeded at making a better Predator movie than the 2018 one, which was perhaps the easiest job in the world but hey, these days one never knows. It's fairly well-shot, the protagonist is fitting with her cute big black eyes, you get to see the Yautja doing its neat predator-y yautjan things. I wouldn't go as far as to say that I liked the movie since I found it rather trite and painfully predictable, though having zero expectations did help a bit.

I agree even though I gave it a higher score.
the girl is too cute to be this menacing but I guess it works on her level to prove herself more than just a pretty face. movie is a generic monster movie and for me it works.

very safe, very kid friendly literally just for kids. lol. nice animation too. if Lasseter can make a comeback from producing decent animated flicks, Pixar will be very sad for firing a hug-o-maniac old coot.

would have been higher had it not had the "this is this movie" bs.
cause there were better characters than buzz in it, so it wouldn't made sense for Andy to want that specific toy.

but, meh.

Jurassic world 1 - just what the heck were they thinking making this movie? 4/10
Jurassic world 2 - This is even worse. Plotline is completely uninteresting, only redeeming part is the last bit. 3/10

Actually yes, the original Jurassic Park film and novel by Michael Crichton are very well written and fleshed out stories. The new cash grab movies are just action CGI crap, they even had to invent retarded non-existent dinosaurs, or dinosaur Raptor SWAT team to try make it watchable.

Elvis 7/10

I wonder if Hollywood can still do normal biopics? This one's a lot better than Bohemian Rapsody, which was almost 100% fantasy, but it still took some stupid liberties, especially the first 30-45 minutes. Elvis seeing 'the light' as a kid was just Laughing Rolling Eyes

But it gets better.

Apocalypse Now (Final Cut): Struggling with scoring this right, but I'd say 7.5/10. After the initial 15 minutes the movie was great for a good hour (the beach scene was fantastic), but quality dropped after the tiger incident. The bunnies didn't add anything and the ending was just stupid. Atmosphere was great though.

Yeah, Apocalypse: Now must be one of the greatest movies of all time, but it's pace is a bit all over the place. Just like how it was made Laughing

The part on the French plantation drags a lot, but it also gives some historic insight in the conflict.

My favorite part is probably the Do Lung bridge crossing. The insanity and chaos are at peak levels there.

How exactly is the ending stupid?

It's one of my favorite movies, I don't see it as a war movie. It was based on the novel "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad. Yeah it is long movie, have to be in an Apocalypse Now mood but i love it every time. There's lots of interesting trivia around the production as well.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/marlon-brando-apocalypse-now_n_55bf66e1e4b06363d5a29e84

Quote:

Calling "Apocalypse Now" a "mess" may be an understatement. A typhoon destroyed the Vietnam War film's set, delaying production by six weeks and skyrocketing the budget by $2 million. The shower-averse Dennis Hopper required an ounce of cocaine for the shoot's duration, Sam Bottoms was high on LSD and speed throughout much of it, and the often-inebriated Martin Sheen suffered a near-fatal heart attack. When Brando arrived, he weighed a reported 300 pounds, was incapable of memorizing his lines, hadn't read Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, on which the film was based, insisted on lengthy conferences to discuss the script and wanted nothing to do with the hard-partying Hopper. To accommodate the actor's corpulence, Coppola agreed to dress Brando in black, employ shadowy lighting and shoot mostly his face. "My film is not about Vietnam -- it is Vietnam," Coppola famously quipped at a press conference following the movie's 1979 Cannes Film Festival premiere.

Because Brando couldn't memorize lines, and because he held up shooting to powwow about the "awful" script, Coppola was forced to consider delaying the production once again. But when Life magazine labeled his project the "most expensive movie in history," that option no longer seemed viable.

"The next response is -- and Coppola asked the question -- well, what do you do in that situation?" Riley said. "Do you hold all of this? Do you send back the helicopters and break off the production so I can go back and rewrite for a few months, or do you do improv with the world’s greatest actor?"

Riley, who watched the outtakes from the improvised shoots while compiling "Listen to Me Marlon," argues that Coppola, whom he "idolizes," can't complain about the shoot going over schedule since Brando rewrote the movie for him. An audio recording in the documentary finds Brando discussing his contributions to the script, made after he finally read Heart of Darkness: "I told Francis, 'You're making an enormous error. This guy Kurtz, don't misuse him.' I rewrote the entire script and I have it all on tape. I have a tape of everything."

All the info and build up to this character, who then didn't do shit and waited to get killed. That he was a lunatic and liked poetry, OK, fair enough, but something more could've been done with that that actually fitted the character. Not saying it should've been an epic guns blazing battle, but to just wait, kill the man, get back in the boat and roll credits Confused I get what they tried to do but I don't think it worked out so well.

Anyway, Platoon will be next (not sure when I'll watch, but I'll get around to it Smile)
