Great question! I was wondering myself ever since i saw many people here say it's a great rpg. I skipped it last year i think because of the lame graphics and except the Deus Ex Series i don't really like first person Rpgs.

Gothic 2 is "ok" if you can get past the HORRIBLE control's then you might enjoy it. I didn't I cannot even lie and say its the best RPG because... well it isn't.

The controls for gothic II are fairly easy to get to grips with, the people here complain because it's not point and click like other RPG's.
I really enjoyed it, the most immersive RPG in my opinion. Try it.
Not the best RPG ever, in my opinion. But damn good.

Exactly. I cannot fathom how people who have played Planescape: Torment and\or Fallout can label Gothic 1\2 as the best RPG's ever. It's not just the controls (which are quite easy to get used to), it's just not as incredible as people make it out to be.
Also, I have a slight suspicion that people who named Gothic 2 their favourite RPG ever never played some of the older ones so they have no basis of comparison.

Planescape sucked IMO...
BG1/2 is the best RPG ever, followed closely by Fallout =D (on pc)
The best RPG on console is FFVII, for sure

Planescape is in a league of its own since there never was and never will be something quite like it. It's definitley not a game for everyone, but those that are willing to stick with it usually find it having by far the best plot in any video game ever, plus the most interesting locations and characters and some incredibly deep party interaction.
It's also highly philosophical and deep, and has the most text of any PC RPG I can remember. I guess that's why it's not a beer and pretzels type of game.

This game rocks! The best rpg I've ever played. Game controls, inventory browsing=sucks big time ,but what it has is an excelent story, beautiful day/night cycle and lots more. I'm playing Night of the Raven atm and the addon is so much better ( new guilds, new island, quests, weapons, spells...).You can play it with the tranlation mod, which adds English subs(http://www.rpgdot.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=89259).

That's the only point about this game...
I really like the storyand it was surely not a game for dumb ppl, but still, I do not liked the gameplay...
But I enjoyed the story, so thats why I finished it !

I'm usually not a RPG gamer but this game got me hooked for a couple of weeks. It have georgeous graphics, not the bests but really decent and some levels are really, really nice. It also have good controls and fighting system, game like Morrowind suck big time in this area, in Gothic 2 it just feel right. The story is good and very open, there's really a lot of thing you can do. You could go straight and finish the quest in 30h or you can chose to become really powerfull and do all the sidequest and the game will last you 100-150h.
This is in my top 10 of all time.

I saw potential in Gothic 2. I played and played, and I seriously WANTED to like it, but in the end, I just couldn't.
The control style was just too awkward for me (I tried every type of keymapping imagineable, still didn't feel right). The game starts off very challenging as there is no way to know whether or not you can take a particular foe on or not. This just led to way too much quicksave/quickload syndrome, and totally killed the immersion for me. Also didn't like the way spell-casting worked.
However, Im sure behind all those clunky controls/flaws, there is a good game. I just got too frustrated with it.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

1. I have played all the old school RPG's like Baldur's Gate II, Planescape, Ultima VII etc
2. I still believe GOTHIC 2 is one of the greatest RPG's ever made
What makes a good RPG ? - The level of immersion created to make u beleive u r part of a living world
Gothic 2, although it lacks complex character development and side stories like BG2 etc, there is no other game out there that has managed to create as immersive a world as Gothic 2 in stunning 3D. As to the controls, they are completely customisable, so it's up to you how you want to configure. It's not at all like Gothic 1 where you are forced to use the predefined keyboard settings. It's possible configure Gothic 2 so you can play entirely w/ the mouse.

The funny thing is that the voice-translation has already been done i think, but there is some problems with the distribution.
But you can use the German addon and use the fan made subtitles for it... They're at the Gothic2 forum here: http://www.rpgdot.com/phpBB2/index.php

RPGs are too different to say that one is the best rpg made. Baldurs Gate 2 was maybe the most komplex and biggest 2d rpg game, Morrowind the same for 3d, and Gothic2 has the most immersive game world ever created. Thats what makes the game stand out so much. The AI is extremely smart for an RPG, especially the AI of of the NPCs. They've got there normal daylife, they eat, buy stuff, talk to oneanother, sleep, go to bars etc. They react on your actions, if you do something it'll be talked around, sooner or later everyone might know what you did. And the world is enormous, but unlike morrowind, its alive. You've got animals (also with a great AI, they hunt for food, sleep etc.), a lot of vegetation and everything is designed by hand, doesn't look as generic as morrowind. You get to see tiny details etc. The grphics might not be the most advanced, but together with the great textures in Gothic2 and the amount of detail in creation its the best looking rpg created.
and for gameplay... its well designed. Not too complex rpg rules, the complexity comes more in form of the story and the freedom you have given.

Well....thinking about it, I enjoyed the Gothic games more than the Fallouts. How anyone has trouble with the controls is beyond me, they take all of 5 minutes to figure out.
