VR fanboyism really got weird when Half Life Alyx came out. This was the first, and only, big mainstream game for the platform so far and I think a lot of the VR evangelists saw it as a big win for it. Most of these guys don't even seem to be actual Half Life fans so the fact that everyone else just wants to play the damn video game normally doesn't even really matter to them.

Who the fuck cares if someone plays the game using a shittier method? It literally does not concern them. It concerns the person playing the game. Thats it. Most people will understand the trade offs and probably still consider it a decent experience for the lore.

I mean personally I don't like to use VR it's a barf simulator for me but I still want to experience the first new Half-Life game in decades somehow because I love the franchise, it's a big part of my childhood so what's so hard to understand about that?

VR has tons of big titles in racing, flight sims, space sims, horror (two resident evil games, for example, a very big franchise), had for many years now.

Alyx is the one of the bigger exclusives and it's exclusive for a very good reason, to me it's a rather gimmicky VR game, it's good as a introduction to VR because it shows cool shit that just isn't possible with other controllers, or if done with other control methods it's just a "wtf is this shit, this is boring af!". At least the start (haven't played the entire game).

Maybe you know, get VR... it's pretty good and it's not expensive either. Buy a used Quest 2, make sure you wash it, play cool games for some month, sell it for the same price..

what i am wondering is , are there any established rental services for VR goggles? i mean i'd like to use it for 1-2 games that seem interesting (to me) but im not going to buy a headset just for those

Doubt that, never heard of. Why not just buy and sell, very easy + good for getting rep up on whatever platform you use to buy/sell on...

Why not just ignore it? Obviously a failure with a few ambitious titles over the years. Big corps dont dare investing and you get indie shit en masse. Enjoy πŸ‘Œ

Indies is where it's at, enjoy your console shit though Smile

VR will (hopefully) never be big, that's when the decline starts.. if flight sims or military sims weren't small niches they also wouldn't be good, they would be super commercial and console'ish to please the casuals. you can rarely have both. Let niches be niches, couldn't care less if the masses can't enjoy what i enjoy.

Just finished this game and HOW CAN THEY JUST END IT LIKE THAT?????

Overall a great game, but you can really tell they had to hold themselves back to not overwhelm new players with VR. I have been playing VR games for quite a while on PSVR, and definitely would have preferred if they had just let go of the brakes a bit.
There are never more than 3 combine enemies at a time and they move rather slowly. Would have loved to see them trying to flank you better with more enemies.

Also the environments were a bit bland, the whole game is basically basement/warehouse/industril area/repeat and in between some alien gunk. I do realize HL1 also had mostly industrial environments, but that game had a better progression with the pacing showing you were moving forward into territory you didn't belong. I didn't get this feeling here, rather it was mostly "move forward to that thing".
Again, this was probably done mostly to constrain the player and not demand too much from them. I sure hope for the next game (if there ever is one) they also use some of Xen or other alien worlds.

It was fine but I also found the human encounters lacking and very few and far in between. Which is why I love this highly replayable mod:

Yup, just playing through some mods. I am only a bit into Cityscape but already the encounters are miles ahead of the main game.

Seriously though, literally just borrow a VR headset.

Get a Quest 2 on Amazon and send it back or something

It's a good game but VR is the big gimmick here, without it's gonna be somewhat mediocre, probably worse than that.

It'd be like Wii Sports with a mouse and keyboard.. yea there's still a game there but c'mon

If someone can somehow read all of their future and it reads "Will never own a VR headset" I'd recommend to just never play this game, just don't.

Fuck it, there are other games.

+1

It would be like first telling the twist for Saw movie and then starting to watch it.

I agree, if you buy a headset and play alyx, there really isn't anything else out that that can even remotely compare to its level of polish. VR Market is still very underserved so it's mostly forever Early Access titles with so much jank it defeats the purpose of VR immersion.
So you are better off just somehow gaining temprary access to a headset, playing it then returning it. Otherwise it will be sitting there collecting a lot of dust.

There are bunch of other awesome VR games besides Alyx worth checking out.

The gameplay in this would be very boring and basic for non-VR.
Like with the shotgun event battle thing in the video above.

In VR? Big moment. It's scary, you're under pressure with a new unknown weapon your hand with enemies closing in. If you miss you gotta manually reload and you might not be that familiar with the controls yet at that point.

in non-VR? You click 3 times and they're dead and it's done.

so gameplay wise, yeah. In VR a single headcrab can make for a scary encounter.

BUT

if it was me, I'd be up for just running around in this world. it's so well designed.
seeing the environments and characters and stuff. the gameplay wouldn't even really matter.

like the leaked hl2 beta back in the day, remember that?
not really something to get for "gameplay" but it was still a blast to experience.
I view this in a similar way.

If there is a chance you'll get VR though, wait, because it's worth experiencing in VR for the first time if you can.

~2 years ago or so I tried the mods that would make it playable without VR but it was messy and ultimately didn't work. After watching a few demos I came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth it. HF: Alyx is a demo for Steam VR, nothing else.
